Valorants First New Map Is Terrible Heres Why

Since Valorant’s beta phase, the game has quickly become repetitive with the same pool of Agents and the same maps. The game previously featured three new maps: Haven, Bind and Split. However, the full release introduces a new map and a new Agent — but the new map, Ascent, is so poorly designed that player feedback pushed Riot Games to remove it from the map rotations.

Valorant has received complaints about mediocre map design since its closed beta. They were cluttered, had too many corners, had lots of walls to block lines of sight, were claustrophobic and were very simplistic. Of course, this may be intentional, due to Agent abilities. It might also mean the developers have not found a sweet spot for a balanced map design.

Unfortunately for players who disliked the previous maps, Ascent’s concept is only different because it is worse.

Ascent is not a balanced map. Depending on the site, the map favors one team over the other. It has a large, open middle area which — while successfully making the map feel less claustrophobic — makes rotations very difficult. There are many entrances and doorways into the middle area and a lack of decent cover.

Coming from the attackers’ side, attackers have a lot more breathing room in the angles they can take and the areas to control. It is also very easy for an attacker to get into Mid Courtyard from Mid Top. For players who enjoy the sniper rifles, this

There is also a lack of cover and angles on B site, which does not give players good spots to hold for defense. It does allow for attackers to easily reach the site or peek in to reveal enemy positions. There are tons of small windows and doorways for utility to be used and thrown through like Sova arrows. This gives attackers huge amounts of opportunities to take control of B site.

If attackers secure B site, they can also close the door connected to Mid Market, which would make rotations harder for defenders coming from A site. By comparison, the A site is a much more balanced site, favorable for both defenders and attackers, with plenty of cover. The door that can be closed on A site has better impact for both sides.

One of the other things players have noticed is the attempt at using the Italian language in Ascent. On multiple signs, there are lots of grammatical errors and mistakes in Italian. Since Ascent is located in Italy and is based off of Venice, it’s disappointing that the language isn’t used correctly.

Because of its bad design, Ascent ruins the tactical paced 5v5 in Valorant rounds. It places players in too many choke points to get spotted or sniped, is not balanced between the two teams, has a lack of favorable positions and has poor attention to detail. Hopefully Riot Games can tweak it, as it has already acknowledged these issues.
