Warning: Major SPOILERS ahead for Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Venom: Let Their Be Carnage director, Andy Serkis, breaks down the film’s universe-changing post-credits scene during a recent interview. The director took the helm of the sequel to Sony’s 2018 dark superhero movie, Venom, in August 2019. Tom Hardy returns as both reporter Eddie Brock and the symbiotic life form he had bonded with, as they face off against Woody Harrelson’s serial killer symbiote host, Cletus Kassady.
Venom: Let Their Be Carnage pits the symbiotic lethal protector against Kassady, who makes a deal with the Carnage symbiote to take down Venom and free Kassady’s love, Frances Barrison (Naomi Harris). All the while, Eddie and Venom must address the growing divide between them, as Venom wants more freedom to eat whomever he desires. Through their struggles against Kassady, Barrison, and Carnage, the pair reconcile and go on a tropical vacation. However, following many teases during the film’s promotion, Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s post-credits scene has forever changed both Sony’s Spider-Man shared universe and the MCU. During their vacation, Eddie and Venom are somehow transported into the MCU, with the pair catching a broadcast of J.K. Simmons’ J.Jonah Jameson boasting about unmasking Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to the world in Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene. Now, Serkis has opened up about the significant scene.
Speaking to THR in an interview, Serkis was asked about the film’s post-credits scene and its development. Serkis first discussed the reveal of Spider-Man and how his appearance was handled, before revealing that the scene itself was a late addition. Serkis explained that discussions on where to include the Spider-Man reveal were happening throughout principal photography, but they hadn’t settled on the precise idea for the teaser until incredibly late into production. Check out Serkis’s reply below:
“So as we were going through principal photography, the inevitable discussions had to be had, but it wasn’t until very, very late on that we reached the precise notion of the teaser that we wanted to lay in there.”
Hardy previously fueled speculation by wearing a cap featuring a Spider-Man: No Way Home logo in September, leading to fans suspecting that he may have a role in the upcoming MCU-set Spider-Man sequel. A crossover between the two cinematic universes had long been suspected by fans following a new agreement between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, with a cameo by Michael Keaton’s Vulture in the Morbius teaser trailer further fueling many fans’ suspicions. Finally, the long-awaited release of No Way Home’s first trailer confirmed a multiverse crossover, as villains from Sony’s original Sam Raimi-helmed Spider-Man trilogy came face to face with Holland’s Peter Parker.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage is an incredibly pivotal point in the current landscape of superhero movies, so Serkis’ struggle in handling the scene during production is understandable. Not only was the director tasked with bridging two franchises, but Sony and Marvel Studios’ fallout over the film rights to Spider-Man happened shortly before pre-production began, so Serkis would have had to be aware and deal with the uncertainty of the situation, likely having to be prepared to address whatever outcome. Regardless of the hardships in production, Serkis has ushered in a surprising age for both Sony and Marvel, with Venom’s cinematic future taking a surprise turn that will leave fans questioning what happens next.
