Chucklefish, publisher of the smash hit Stardew Valley, has revealed the next game it’s publishing, a point and click mystery called Loco Motive. While Chucklefish has had some trouble in the past with accusations of unpaid devs on Starbound, the publisher has a record of backing successful projects, with Risk of Rain and Eastward also to its credit. This new title seems like it will right into Chucklefish’s wheelhouse.

The company does seem to be pursuing a theme, as all of the titles in Chucklefish’s portfolio share similar cute pixel-style art, and most have a focus on exploration and adventure. Chucklefish has published quite a few games, the most notable being Stardew Valley, which was a major success that hearkened back to farming simulators of old. The company also develops games in-house, such as Starbound and Wargroove, and has another game coming called Witchbrook that feels like Stardew Valley as an isometric magic school. Even while Chucklefish is hard at work on its own titles, though, it still finds time to publish others, including a new debut game that should have mystery lovers excited.

A press release from Chucklefish accompanies an announcement trailer on YouTube to reveal a new game from the publisher called Loco Motive. Developed by new studio Robust Games, Loco Motive is a point and click murder mystery game set aboard a train, reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. When a rich socialite dies aboard the 1930s steam train the Reuss Express, gamers will take on the roles of three different characters to figure out what happened and who committed the murder. While Loco Motive looks a bit more dramatic than the cozy indie game feel of many of Chucklefish’s titles, its point and click gameplay and pixel-art style should provide ample nostalgia to fans who grew up with similar games.

Loco Motive boasts a long list of features, including everything from its three playable characters to full voice acting. While the game can be played as a classic point and click adventure, players can also take full control of each character for a more modern experience. Along the way to solving the mystery, gamers will meet a colorful cast of characters and solve puzzles to determine who committed the murder and why. The press release states that these puzzles “won’t leave you head-scratching for hours,” and that Loco Motive includes an in-game tip line gamers can call if they get stuck and need help. Fans of murder mysteries saw the well-reviewed Murder Mystery Machine release earlier this year, and now they have Loco Motive to look forward to next year.

Chucklefish has carved out a niche for itself, and that niche definitely has its fans. Stardew Valley’s creator, Eric Barone, is hard at work on two games, and though it’s unclear at time of writing if Chucklefish will publish those games, the company has plenty of other offerings for fans of pixel-art games. And with a murder mystery coming soon, it’s clear that Chucklefish isn’t afraid to mix up genres every now and again. With its vast catalog, Chucklefish might just have something for everyone, and it will certainly have something for mystery fans when Loco Motive releases next year.
