Venom 2 Every Unanswered Question After Let There Be Carnage

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The condensed nature of Venom 2’s plot means Let There Be Carnage leaves a slew of unanswered questions in its wake. Venom 2 has seemingly injected fresh impetus into a stale box office landscape, with the movie’s opening weekend the biggest domestically since late 2019. While Venom: Let There Be Carnage has opened to a wide variance in reviews that reflect Venom 2018’s similar reception, this lack of critical certainty will mean very little to audiences keen to see Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock integrated into the vastly popular MCU.

Venom 2 undoubtedly ups the zany ante from its first installment, doubling down on a smattering of Marvel easter-eggs and a host of CGI symbiote fun despite its lean 97-minute runtime. Fans keen to see more of Eddie and Venom’s odd couple back and forth bickering will not leave theatres disappointed, with Venom: Let There Be Carnage toeing a largely comedic line for much of its narrative. The Venom sequel also sets up several new characters, including the eponymous Carnage (Woody Harrelson), his eternal lover Shriek (Naomie Harris), and dogged detective Mulligan (Stephen Graham) who is later reborn as the symbiotic crime-fighter Toxin.

Yet despite doing well to include so much content in what feels like an over-streamlined production, Venom 2 throws up as many questions as it does answers within both the Sony Spider-Man universe and the wider MCU. The Venom sequel’s obvious convergence on its now infamous post-credits scene may have ultimately skewed into over-reliance, leaving many threads feeling un-pulled in the context of Venom’s canon. Here’s every unanswered question after Venom: Let There Be Carnage ends.

How Do Eddie and Venom Fit Into The MCU?

Venom 2 Every Unanswered Question After Let There Be Carnage

Venom 2’s bombshell post-credits scene acts as gratuitous fanservice of the best kind, finally promising to pit Tom Hardy’s Venom against Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The creative direction from both teams will, understandably, see these two Marvel behemoths clash in the realm of the MCU’s phase 4 due to its continued popularity over the current Sony-verse. Yet beyond the much-vaunted setting confirmed by J. Jonah Jameson’s (J. K. Simmons) news-based tirade, very little is known about how this titanic clash will actually come to pass. Indeed, even the teleportation method used to bring Eddie and Venom into the MCU is shrouded in mystery given Venom’s utter bemusement at how the pair arrive in their new hotel surroundings. Answering the how, whether through the phase 4 multiverse or other means, will be key to understanding what summoned Venom into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and perhaps providing a way to glean why Brock and Venom suddenly switched planes (of reality) at the end of Venom 2.

Are Shriek & Carnage Really Dead?

Venom 2 Every Unanswered Question After Let There Be Carnage

Avengers: Endgame’s reverse snap completely altered audience perceptions on the finality of MCU character deaths, setting a new precedent that almost anyone can be revived under the right circumstances. Recent appearances from long-dormant or presumed dead characters such as Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings or Sam Raimi’s J. Jonah Jameson incarnation in Spider-Man: Far From Home also prove that it is never too late to return to MCU’s ever-widening arena. Yet, in the context of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Cletus Kasady and Frances Barrison’s deaths amidst the debris of a falling church look more final. Woody Harrelson’s Kasady/Carnage is almost certainly deceased after Venom eats both halves of the crazed duo, and while a slither of Carnage survived to enable Toxin’s entrance into the story (more on this later), it is safe to presume Carnage is dead. Shriek’s demise is slightly more uncertain, with the assumption that she dies after being crushed by the falling church fully primed to make fools of viewers further down the line. While there is, of course, the net of the MCU’s multiverse now in play to ensure either of these characters could return, it is unlikely either will get their day in the cinematic sun any time soon.

What Is She-Venom’s Future?

Venom 2 Every Unanswered Question After Let There Be Carnage

Whereas characters like Carnage died very physical deaths at the end of Venom 2, She-Venom’s is a demise of the metaphoric kind given the Venom franchise’s sudden convergence with the MCU. Michelle Williams’ Anne Weying remains a hugely popular character across the first two Venom films, with her initial transformation into She-Venom hailed by then-director Ruben Fleischer as a potential She-Venom movie nexus moment. However, this glittering vision has not materialized, with Williams’ She-Venom restricted to a largely peripheral role as Eddie Brock’s savior in Venom 2. With Eddie and Venom transported onto a different plane of existence, it may be a while before Weying/She-Venom can accrue more much-needed screen-time. Whilst bringing She-Venom through to the MCU would certainly fit the bill of surprising character moves Marvel is becoming known for, plans for her integration, if there are any, remain completely under wraps for now.

How Will Toxin Be Used?

Venom 2 Every Unanswered Question After Let There Be Carnage

Mulligan’s revival from the brink of death confirms the emergence of one of Marvel’s most powerful symbiotes: Toxin, into the Venom franchise. Toxin presents as an antihero in Marvel Comics canon due to his shared psyche with the ever vigilant and forthright Mulligan, and the duo resolve to fight crime much in the same vein as Venom and Brock. Mulligan’s previous law-enforcement training, including a stint with the FBI, allows Toxin to excel in this vigilante role historically, so it will be interesting to see if Toxin becomes the same avenging hero in the current Venom franchise. Sony’s Spider-Man universe is pushing full steam ahead with its antihero release schedule, with Jared Leto’s Morbius the latest entity scheduled for cinematic release in 2022. The Living Vampire has strong ties to the Ravencroft Institute, meaning a film in which Toxin hunts Morbius could very well exist in the realm of possibility.

What Does Venom’s MCU Confirmation Mean For Sony’s Other Spider-Man Universe Characters?

The final fate of Sony’s current Venom intellectual properties now primarily rests on Marvel’s willingness to integrate these characters into the wider MCU. Phase 4 promises to explore the unchartered territory of the multiverse, meaning all bets are off when considering characters from alternate timelines appearing in the MCU canon. On the one hand, teleporting characters a-la Venom 2’s ending is a very convenient way to port over the best of the Sony-verse, while on the other, many Marvel fans will only accept so much smoke and mirror-style plot devices without an eventual explanation as to their origins. Ultimately, audience fervor tends to decide how Marvel characters get inserted into the MCU, with Venom being a prime example. Whatever path the MCU decides to take, its insistence on absorbing Venom into its ranks should eventually answer the burning questions left over from Venom 2.
