Verizons New Tool Makes It Easier To Avoid Fake Local Number Scams

The Call Filter app from Verizon has received an update allowing users to identify neighborhood spoofing calls and send them straight to voicemail. Neighborhood spoofing calls are much like the average spam call, except the number used by the scammer shares the area code and prefix as the targeted victims. For many, that the number seems to come from somewhere in their region makes the caller look more legitimate than most spam calls.

Verizon is not the only carrier offering a spam blocking service; T-Mobile customers can install the Scam Shield app and the iPhone lets users block calls from unknown numbers. Now more than ever, online scammers have gotten creative in their methods to steal personal information. Whether it be through calling about false Amazon purchases or pretending to make a cryptocurrency based on Disney’s The Mandalorian, the methods available to scammers seem almost endless. This is why many companies are developing simple, easy-to-use protection options for consumers.

Verizon’s latest update to Call Filter lets users block calls using their prefix and area code by going into the app and selecting the “other filters” option in the block management menu. From there, users can activate the “block similar to mine” option to block calls from numbers using the same first three digits as theirs. Verizon announced the new function will, by default, block all incoming calls using the specified area code if the incoming numbers are not already saved in the user’s contacts.

How Can It Be Customized?

The feature is easy to find and offers a more robust option than some alternatives. Of course, certain functions are held behind a $3 premium subscription to Call Filter Plus. The plus subscription will let users place 10 phone numbers on a personalized block list, while the free version allows up to five saved numbers. Android users can also create a filter to block specific area codes, but only through a premium subscription. The iPhone call filter FAQ page did not indicate when or if a similar feature will be available on iOS.

If users want to allow a call blocked by the filter to come through, simply go to the “recent tab” in the app, select the blocked number, and press the “Ignore this filter” option under the number. Doing so will let the selected number ignore the filter until deleted by the user. Overall, the feature sounds all-encompassing, but Verizon wants this to be easy for customers to set up. More customizable methods might be added later, but only after Verizon has sold the new function and judged how worthwhile it would be to expand what is there.
