Vikings: 10 Most Brutal Kills In The Entire Series

In a show titled Vikings, you can’t expect a shortage of violence and brutal killings. Between Ragnar and Yidu, these are the absolute worst deaths.

Natural deaths are quite rare in Vikings. That’s probably because they’d be less entertaining. The ailing man who dies peacefully? That’s possible but very unlikely. Most characters die at the hands of others. Sometimes the method of killing is courtesy of the standard stabbing, and then there are the times that killers go too far.

It’s logical to assume that resolving disputes peacefully was never an option for people who lived during the Viking Age. Every disagreement ended with a killing. Every loser in a physical or psychological battle ended up dead too. There was no conceding and going away to live peacefully.

10 Judith Poisons Aethelred

Poisoning people was common in ancient times and Judith shocks viewers by doing the same to her own son. When Alfred becomes king, Judith is thrilled. She likes him more than her other son Aethelred. And when she discovers that Aethelred is planning a coup, she makes the decision to protect one son by murdering the other.

Since no son would be suspicious of a meal offered by his mother, Judith places poison in her rebellious son’s wine at the dinner table. As they share the meal, Aethelred begins to die slowly. His face becomes pale, veins protrude and then he smashes his face on the dinner table before falling to the ground. Judith isn’t remorseful because she believes Alfred is the ruler chosen by God.

9 Rollo Impales Arne Then Lifts Him Up With Spear

Season 2’s “Brother’s War,” sees Ragnar facing off against Rollo who has betrayed him, and he’s now fighting with Jarl Borg. After saving Floki, Arne decides to stay on the battlefield and fight Rollo. Sadly, he is no match for the traitor.

After a brief duel, Rollo impales him with a spear. In a show of super-strength, Rollo uses the spear to lift Arne’s body up with ease, like he is lifting a piece of meat with a fork. He does this so that Ragnar and Arne’s fellow fighters can see what he just did.

8 A Slave Kills Helga

The death of Helga’s daughter hurts her for a long time. She never really gets over it. When she meets an Arab girl named Tanaruz in the Spanish Caliphate, she takes her as a slave but treats her like her own daughter. Sadly, Tanaruz isn’t too happy about being displaced from the place she has always known as home.

In the Season 4 finale, she decides to take extreme measures. She plunges a dagger into Helga’s neck before taking her own life since she is aware she’ll be punished if she lives. It’s a tragic end to Helga’s story, considering the fact that she was only seeking happiness by taking in Tanaruz.

7 Sigvard Pays The Price For Domestic Violence

Even though violence shouldn’t be met with violence, no one can fault Lagertha for what she does in this scene. After being mistreated by the abusive husband for months, Lagertha finally reaches her limit. Moments before his death, he sends some men to beat Legertha up for disobeying him.

He then makes fun of her breasts in front of everyone before ripping her dress open to show his guests her naked form. To his shock, Lagerth grabs a knife and stabs him in the eye. His nephew then approaches as if coming to kill Legertha but beheads him, sending his head rolling on the floor.

6 Ivar’s Bodyguard Gets Ripped Apart

After Ivar gets overthrown as King of Kattegat, he escapes to Rus. Oleg finds out and captures him together with one of his bodyguards. Oleg believes that there is a sinister reason why Ivar is in Rus. He doesn’t buy the fact that he is simply fleeing.

Oleg has always proved that his brutality knows no limits. He goes ahead and ties Ivar’s bodyguard to trees. A rope is pulled, ripping apart a piece of his body. He is then flung around as blood and chunks of body parts fall on Oleg and Ivar.

5 Jarl Borg’s Abdomen Gets Sliced Open

Jarl Borg’s death unfolds in the most interesting of ways. When someone opens his cell late in the night, Ragnar’s foe thinks he is being freed. He carries his first wife’s skull and leaves only to find Ragnar and Kattegat’s citizens waiting for him.

The drums beat, readying the crowd for the execution. Ragnar uses a skinning knife to slice Borg’s back open. He then uses a hatchet to hack him open until the ribs are exposed. The gore-fest doesn’t end there. Ragnar then takes the lungs out, making Borg die of suffocation. Despite the brutality he has been subjected to, Borg still manages a smile.

4 Ragnar Drowns Yidu

Yidu is brought to Kattegat among other slaves captured during a Frankia raid. Aslaug likes her and buys her. Her looks attract Ragnar who becomes close to her. The two become romantically involved. She also provides Ragnar with special drugs which he soon becomes addicted to.

Unfortunately, fate isn’t too kind to her. When she refuses to give Ragnar more drugs and threatens to expose his secret, he drowns her. Worse still, the drowning incident happens while two of Ragnar’s son watch from a distant

3 Hvitserk Confuses Lagertha With Ivar

Most fans have a problem with the way Lagertha was killed off. Given how fierce a warrior she was, she at least deserved to die in battle. Sadly, that’s not what happens. In “Death and the Serpent,” Hvitserk becomes paranoid and begins hallucinating. Amma tries to put some sense in his head but he beats her before walking into the rain.

As he wanders around, he sees the trail of a snake. He follows it and when he finds it, he begins stabbing it with anger, believing it’s Ivar. As soon as he finishes, he realizes in fact Lagertha. He is regretful but a dying Lagertha tells him it’s okay since she’ll be going to Valhalla to be with Ragnar.

2 Ivar Pours Molten Gold Into A Priest’s Mouth

That Ivar is a psycho is a fact well known. In the Season 5 premiere, he attacks the city of York and turns almost the entire population into victims of his limitless brutality. However, one priest gets some special treatment from ‘The Boneless’ since the Vikings have no love for Christians.

Ivar instructs his bloodthirsty men to take a golden cross from the church and melt it. They then pin down the priest. Ivar keeps his mouth open using hand axes before pouring the molten gold into the priest’s mouth. The gold steams and bubbles before turning solid. The priest’s body is then dragged away using a horse before Ivar lets out that villain laugh.

1 Ragnar Gets Tortured Then Thrown Into Snake Pit

Some might argue that the show has never recovered from Ragnar’s death. In Season 4, his past actions weigh on him so he goes to King Ecbert, asking him to kill him Instead of granting him his wish, Ecbert hands him over to King Aelle.

Aelle tortures him, even carving a cross on Ragnar’s head. He asks Ragnar to repent and be spared but he refuses. Instead, Ragnar goes on a lengthy pre-death speech of how a feast awaits him at Vahalla. He seems to be glad about going to the mythical heaven as his cage hangs over a pit of sneaks. Bored by his toughness, Aelle drops him down to the pit below and snakes have their fill of him. It’s a brutal way for the protagonist to say goodbye.
