Vikings: 10 Things About Floki That Make No Sense

The characters in Vikings don’t have the best reputation for consistency. As such, it’s no wonder there are things about Floki that make no sense.

At the beginning of History’s Vikings, Floki is introduced as Ragnar’s best friend. He builds boats and lives with his soulmate, Helga. The most devout of all characters, Floki nurtures a special relationship with nature and with Norse gods. He’s a trickster by heart and comes across as pretty neurotic. He hides his insecurities and anxieties behind his signature giggling.

Fans love him because he deeply cares about those he loves and hate him for his hypocrisy. Most characters in this epic TV show are pretty inconsistent and don’t always make sense. Here are ten such illogical things that have to do with one of the show’s longest-running characters.

10 Master Builder – But Just For Ships

The audience first meets Floki in “Rites Of Passage” when Ragnar comes to see his progress on a longboat he is building. He builds boats that allow Vikings to travel further away than ever before and thus contributes greatly to the prosperity of his people.

Such a skilled craftsman, yet all he does is build ships. Since his ships were considered cutting-edge technology, one would think he is going to broaden his horizons when it comes to his vocation.

9 Floki Should Be Closer To The Seer

Floki’s faith in Norse gods is stronger than anyone else’s. The most spiritual, he also has the closest relationship with nature and lives away from the rest of the Kattegat. When Vikings want to decipher their dreams or see what the gods have in store for them, they go see the Seer – but not Floki. Sure, he has his own visions and perhaps doesn’t need the Seer’s guidance.

But shouldn’t the most devout believer go see the shaman more often? When the two met, the Seer licked his hand, which signifies respect. Perhaps Floki is going to be the new seer in season 6.

8 He Is Loyal To His Wife

Floki’s loyalty and kindness to his wife are definitely one of his best traits, but it sadly doesn’t make much sense. Vikings aren’t exactly monogamous and they definitely don’t treat female characters the way our beloved trickster treats his wife.

While Ragnar and Lagertha are trying to get it on with Athelstan, Floki doesn’t flinch when in contact with other women. Some Vikings even resort to rape when they go on their infamous raids, but Floki (just) sticks with murder.

7 Floki Has A Massive Ego

Spiritual people are generally humble and emotionally detached, but not Floki. He lets his ego get the best of him and seems to lack purpose more than any other Viking on the show. Religious individuals are not supposed to suffer from existential crises, while Floki seems to be struggling most of the time.

He is often driven by unfavorable emotional states, such as jealousy, insecurity, and anxiety. He thinks very highly of himself and tends to be self-righteous. Big egos and a life devoted to the gods are mutually exclusive.

6 A Great Friend, Crippled By Jealousy

Floki considers Ragnar as his brother, yet cannot hide his jealousy when the leader of Kattegat gets attached to his Christian prisoner of war, Athelstan. Presented as the best friend a man could ever have, Floki doesn’t necessarily act like it.

Sure, he values Ragnar and his sons more than his own life, but is that really friendship? His attachment to Ragnar is anxious and honestly seems a bit codependent. That’s not what friendship is about.

5 Calling His Daughter Angrboða

In season 2, Helga announces she is pregnant and Floki decides to name the child Angrboða, after a giantess who was Loki’s first wife. The name translates to “she who brings sorrow”. Before she’s even born, Floki freaks out and thinks that he is going to be a terrible father.

But – why? After all, he is a significant member of the community, Ragnar’s best friend nurtures an enviable relationship with the gods. His freakout as well as naming his child after a giantess rather than a goddess is something that doesn’t add up with Floki’s character.

4 The Iceland Fiasco

In season 5, Floki gets his own storyline: he discovers a majestic island, today’s Iceland. His expedition settles there, but Floki fails to keep it together.

The inhabitants are at each other’s throats, burdened by grief and revenge. Floki was a commander of one of the most epic raids, the Paris raid, which means he makes for a decent leader. But in Iceland, he couldn’t control the few people who came with him.

3 Waiting For Ages Before Killing Athelstan

Ragnar brings Athelstan back from the British Isles in season 1 and Floki instantly hates him because he is a Christian. He is passionately against religious pluralism, so he insists on killing Athelstan from the very beginning. Since Ragnar has a soft spot for the Christian, he lets him live.

Athelstan is finally murdered by Floki in season 3. Not because he is a Christian, though, but because Floki is so jealous. It makes no sense why he waited so long. On top of it all, Ragnar decides to get baptized so he can join his Christian soulmate in heaven one day.

2 Intrigued By Islam In The Mediterranean

Floki cannot stomach Christians and won’t even consider sparing their lives, but he doesn’t seem that bothered when he first encounters Islam on his travels to the Mediterranean.

On an expedition led by Bjorn, he is incredibly mellow and indifferent about seeing people who don’t live in accordance with the Norse gods.

1 Gets Away With Not Being In The Shield Wall

Floki is a great warrior, but he doesn’t play by the rules. While most Vikings are equipped with a long axe, his weapons of choice are small hatchets and knives. He is nimble, quick, and agile.

One of the most famous military tactics in the world of the Vikings is the formation of a shield wall, but Floki always stays back and lets his brothers be in the front lines. Once the fighting begins, Floki makes his way forward.
