Vikings 10 Things You Didnt Know About Torvi

Torvi is a fan-favorite character on Vikings, with a strong character arc and compelling story. Throughout the course of the series, she transforms herself from an abused and powerless queen into an independent and powerful warrior.

Torvi is present from season two through season six and changes quite a bit in the interim. There are plenty of things that fans may not remember about this complex character.

10 She Is Not Based On A Real Person

Vikings 10 Things You Didnt Know About Torvi

The Vikings character of Torvi is completely fictional and not based on any real historical figure. Instead, she is an amalgam of the legendary shield maidens, Vikings queens, and everyday women.

Fans aren’t complaining though. This fictional character is a favorite and has an incredible story arc, from enemy to ally and helpless maiden to fierce warrior.

9 She Has Been Married Four Times

Vikings 10 Things You Didnt Know About Torvi

When fans are first introduced to Torvi, she is married to Jarl Borg, putting her in opposition to Ragnar and his family. Jarl Borg is eventually brutally killed by Ragnar. Torvi next marries King Horik’s son, the Prince of Denmark, Erlendur. However, he is an abusive and cruel husband. He eventually tries to force Torvi into killing Bjorn by threatening her child. Torvi kills Erlunder instead.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, after choosing to save Bjorn’s life and instead kill her husband, Torvi and Bjorn become involved. They marry and have two children together, Hali and Asa. After splitting up with Bjorn, Torvi marries Bjorn’s half-brother Ubbe, with whom she has one child, Ragnar. Aside from Bjorn, Ubbe is definitely Torvi’s best romantic partner.

8 Only One Of Her Four Children Survives

Over the course of the Vikings TV show, Torvi has four children by three fathers, but she tragically loses three of the four. Her first son, Guthrum, by Jarl Borg, is killed in a raid. Her second son, Hali, is Bjorn’s son and is killed by White Hair while in the care of Lagertha.

Asa, her daughter by Bjorn, falls out of a boat and drowns. She bears another son, Ragnar, with her new husband Ubbe. Fans can only hope that this time, Torvi will see her child grow into adulthood.

7 She’s Still In Love With Bjorn

Torvi loved Bjorn for a long time before their marriage. She felt respect and admiration for this man who treated her kindly and tried to protect her from mistreatment. When Bjorn stops loving her and wishes to dissolve their marriage, she agrees, even though she still loves him.

Torvi releases Bjorn graciously from their marriage vows and does not make him feel guilty or try to stop him. However, it is clear that she is heartbroken that he wishes to leave her. Though she cares for Ubbe, if Bjorn were still alive she would probably take him back.

6 The Actress Is Helga’s Sister

Torvi and Helga, though unrelated in the Vikings series, are played by real-life sisters, Georgia and Maude Hirst. Some fans noticed early on that the two had shared a remarkable resemblance to one another.

It turns out that they are both the daughters of Michael Hirst, who created and wrote the Vikings show.

5 She Wasn’t Always A Warrior

Vikings 10 Things You Didnt Know About Torvi

While the later Torvi saw plenty of blood and battle, early Vikings Torvi was nowhere near the warrior that she eventually became. In the episode where her husband, Erlunder, tries to get her to kill Bjorn, she is given a crossbow and told, “No one expects you to be able to fire it properly, but if you get close enough, you can’t miss.”

Torvi only becomes a shieldmaiden and soldier later in life. Her great loyalty and admiration for Bjorn’s mother, Lagertha, is probably a strong motivating factor for this decision. She likely craves the confidence and respect that the shield maiden’s command, given her past feelings of helplessness and humiliation.

4 She Is 20 Years Older Than Ubbe

Vikings 10 Things You Didnt Know About Torvi

One possible plot hole that fans like to point out is Torvi’s age. When she is introduced as Jarl Borg’s wife, fans assume that she is at least 18. This means that when Ubbe is born she is already in her 20s. Even if Torvi were much younger when married to Jarl Borg, she must be at least 16 years older than Ubbe.

When she marries Ubbe and has his child, Torvi can’t be any younger than 36, and may actually be in her 40’s. While this is possible, she looks remarkably good for what in the Viking Age would have been quite senior. It is also unlikely that she would be marrying and having children at that age. Fans have noted that while the males of the show age visibly, the women of Vikings seem eternally youthful.

3 She Killed Her Second Husband

A major turning point for Torvi’s character comes when she makes the important decision to kill Erlendur. She tried to leave him before, but Erlendur always had a way of keeping her submissive, usually by threatening her only child.

When Erlendur threatens her child again and tries to force her to kill Bjorn, she kills him instead, freeing herself. Erlendur was one of the most hated characters in the Vikings series.

2 Her First Husband Kept His Ex-wife’s Skull

Jarl Borg may not have been as abusive a husband as Erlendur, but he was still far from sane. He kept the skull of his dead wife with him and consulted it on important affairs.

This had to have seemed morbid and unnatural, even in the violent Viking culture. Torvi put up with his macabre antics, though, and was loyal to him until his death.

1 Rollo Saved Her Life

In season two, Ragnar’s men, including Rollo and Floki, attack and beat Jarl Borg in retaliation for his earlier invasion of Kattegat. The men turn to the heavily pregnant Torvi and seem ready to hurt her, as well.

Rollo, however, stops them from hurting Torvi and her unborn child. While Rollo can be cruel and vicious, in this scene, he displays his ability to show mercy.
