Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Lagertha, portrayed by Katheryn Winnick, is the only sane person in the middle of all the bloodshed and hate in the hit show Vikings. At the beginning of the show, Lagertha wants nothing but success and many children with the love of her life Ragnar. Things, however, fell out of place quickly, forcing her to become a survivor, and that is how the best of the sword maiden was revealed.

As she fought for her survival and that of her son Bjorn, she was forced to make tough choices gathering lots of enemies along the way. While most people agree that Lagertha is the most humane and just Viking in the show, some of the things she did destroyed both her and the legend of Ragnar that she helped build. In the midst of all the hate and some love, Lagertha made some grave mistakes but not without saving the day more times than most.

10 HEROIC: HELPING RAGNAR RETAKE KATTEGAT

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

When Lagertha left Ragnar to live with Sigvard, it seemed as if her future was over, but she still thrived. When Earl Borg took over Kattegat, Lagertha saw the need to restore her ex-husband to power in their former home.

Helping Ragnar put her in trouble with her new abusive husband, but it was the best mover for Bjorn’s and her own future. With her help, Ragnar was able to evict Borg, and Bjorn got back together with Ragnar, which was good for his future. Fighting alongside Ragnar also repaired her relationship with Aslaug, at least for the short term.

9 WORST: LEAVING RAGNAR

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

All the problems in Ragnar’s family were caused by Lagertha’s decision to leave him. It was the first and worst mistake she made. Ragnar was a good leader but definitely not a good husband; to Lagertha at least. Lagertha, however, loved him enough to leave his brother Rollo and marry him. All the gains Ragnar had made in Kattegat were with the help of Lagertha. While Ragnar’s betrayal and infidelity were unforgivable, Lagertha abandoning him to the wolfs that entered his life was unforgivable.

Kattegat was her home and Ragnar, a stronger leader with Lagertha in his life. Her departure broke up Ragnar’s family bringing divisions that have never been repaired. Leaving Ragnar also exposed Bjorn to more dangers, including his abusive stepfather Sigvard who wouldn’t even allow him to train to be a warrior.

8 HEROIC: KILLING KALF

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Legrttha’s best and also worst trait was her inability to share. After killing Sigvard, well, with Einar’s help, Lagertha had every right to rule Hedeby. Kalf, even if he saved her life, didn’t have the right to take it from her. While sharing the earldom equally with Kalf was a great compromise to keep her in power in Hedeby, it wasn’t the best for her.

Kalf was a better choice of husband compared to the abusive Sigvard, but he wasn’t as ambitious and bold as Lagertha. Besides, agreeing to live with Kalf, the rest of her life would mean she had decided to turn a blind eye to his previous betrayal, which would make her look weak. Killing him on their wedding night was rather cold though.

7 WORST: REFUSING TO ACCOMPANY RAGNAR TO ENGLAND

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Ragnar abandoned the entire kingdom and his family when he disappeared after his defeat to Rollo in Frankia. It was Ragnar’s lowest moment, having been betrayed and defeated by the very brother he had protected and saved. Ragnar really needed a friend at the time, and Lagertha could have taken the chance to show her love and confidence in Ragnar, but she didn’t.

When Ragnar requested her to accompany him to England, it was to seek revenge for their people killed by Ecbert for whom Lagertha was as responsible as Ragnar himself. She, however, refused and let him sail on his own, which led to his death. To a large extend, she was just as responsible for Ragnar’s death as Rollo.

6 HEROIC: KILLING KNUT

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Lagertha showed lots of hatred of sexual harassment in the patriarchial Scandinavian society from the very beginning when she waded off two rapists on her own. She was especially hateful of arrogant men and bullies who demeaned and underestimated her strength.

Knut was one of those people you just hate and his death helped lots of people although she would have lost her head for it. Killing Knut knowing that it meant the death sentence for her, is one of the most heroic moves Lagertha made, although Ragnar took the fall for it.

5 WORST: CHEATING ON RAGNAR

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

While the true extent of the infidelity wasn’t revealed until after Ragnar’s death, it showed that Lagertha probably didn’t love Ragnar as much as everyone thought. Ragnar helped Lagertha become the powerful warrior she was and showed more love for her and Bjorn than his brother Rollo.

Ragnar was also oblivious of Rollo’s advances on Lagertha, and the least Lagertha could do was at least be faithful to him. Her infidelity became the greatest disappointment to Bjorn when he found out that he could no longer call himself Ragnar’s son. It also puts holes in her character, considering she left Ragnar when he cheated on her.

4 HEROIC: BECOMING THE QUEEN OF KATTEGAT

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Lagertha was the most deserving person to rule Kattegat after her husband’s death considering she fought for it with Ragnar. While Aslaug and her sons had as much claim to it, Aslaug hadn’t done much to earn her place on the throne as queen and wasn’t the powerful leader Kattegat was used to.

Lagertha’s move to take back her rightful place as the queen shows just how committed she was to her dreams since the time she was Ragnar’s wife. It also allowed her to continue Ragnar’s legacy and bring sanity to Kattegat.

3 WORST: KILLING ASLAUG

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Time is supposed to heal wounds, and after years of success and fame, Lagertha had every reason to get over her hatred for Aslaug. Besides, Ragnar had let Lagertha live happily with other husbands after him, and the least she could do was let him have his wife. However, Lagertha just wouldn’t let it go.

Killing Aslaug was also very cold of her because Aslaug had willingly left the throne for her. She had every reason to exile or just let her live as a common woman after taking her throne back. The murder split Ragnar’s family further and increased Ivar and Hvistek’s hatred for her, which is why they later took Kattegat from her and killed her.

2 HEROIC: HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HAEHMUND

Vikings 5 Worst Things Lagertha Did (& 5 Most Heroic)

Bishop Haehmund was the only person with as much vision and fighting spirit as Ragnar. Lagertha was also in need of love after the death of Ragnar and the multiple tumultuous relationships she had been in with abusive Earls. While some people hoped that she would strike something with King Harald, he was just too wild for her, which is why falling in love with Haehmund, despite their differences, was welcome.

It was also very brave of her considering the threats she faced as a woman ruling in a patriarchal society. Her relationship with Haehmund also saved her life when they were finally forced out of Kattegat by Ivar. It is, however, not clear if the bishop really loved her!

1 WORST: REFUSING TO NEGOTIATE WITH IVAR

Negotiation is the one thing that has proved very elusive in Ragnar’s family, and as an adult, everyone expected Lagertha to initiate it, but she failed. She had many chances to create a bond between Bjorn and Aslaug’s sons, but she preferred to alienate them and keep Kattegat instead, a move that only made them stronger and more hateful.

When Ivar and Hvistek received reinforcements from Frankia and gave her an option to make peace, Lagertha could have taken the option and ended the bleeding. However, her ego got the best of her, and that is how she lost her kingdom.
