Village Mother Miranda Is Resident Evils Most Influential Villain Ever

One of the biggest mysteries in the build-up to the release of Resident Evil Village was involved who Mother Miranda is and why she appeared to be so important. Various trailers and demos indirectly showed her power over the world of Resident Evil by how the villagers and Four Houses spoke of her, and now that Resident Evil Village is finally out, it’s safe to say her reputation preceded her. It may be more accurate to say that she was undersold by her devotees, because Mother Miranda proved that she is undoubtedly the most influential character in the Resident Evil series.

[WARNING: Major Spoilers for Resident Evil Village below]

Mother Miranda’s story begins 100 years before the events of RE Village when she was simply Miranda, the loving mother to her daughter Eva until her premature death at the hands of the Spanish Influenza. In her grief, Miranda entered a cave beneath the village to wait for her death to come. It was in this cave that she would discover The Mold, which quickly mutated Miranda, giving her prolonged life, health, and complete control over her cells and bodily appearance.

Miranda became certain that the healing properties of The Mold could revive Eva. She began experimenting with The Mold and its effects on people, eventually discovering that not everyone takes to The Mold in the way she had, sometimes turning into Armored Lycans and other monsters – but those who did survive gained incredible abilities. Her pursuit to bring her daughter back through this experimentation would cause Miranda to indirectly kickstart everything that plagues the world of Resident Evil, not just in Village but in the entire series.

Mother Miranda Helped Create Resident Evil’s Zombies

In the 1950’s, Miranda became a researcher, biologist, and mentor to a young Oswell Spencer. Spencer was fascinated by the potential of The Mold’s mutative properties but unlike Resident Evil Village’s Miranda, he sought to use The Mold to shape humanity into his own twisted vision. This ultimately split the two, but Spencer honored the importance of his connection to Miranda by using an old symbol from her village as the iconic logo for Umbrella Pharmaceuticals. His experiments crossing The Mold with the Stairway of the Sun flower ultimately lead to the creation of the T-Virus.

Miranda also indirectly sets the new bio-weapon crisis in motion due to her work with The Connection. They attempted to bring Eva back in a physical form but gave “birth” to Eveline instead. Miranda, now known as Mother Miranda, saw this as a failure and returned home to continue her experiments on the villagers of RE Village. The Connection took Eveline to develop her abilities as a Human-Mold hybrid before losing her and Mia Winters prior to RE 7. The subsequent infection of the Baker family and Ethan Winters would not only bring an end to Mother Miranda, but bring about the next generation of Resident Evil.

Mother Miranda’s final attempt to bring her daughter back involved Ethan and Mia’s daughter Rose, who is revealed to be a Human-Mold hybrid due to Ethan’s mutation in RE7. Though Mother Miranda is ultimately killed alongside Ethan, RE Village’s epilogue shows Rose growing up in a world still affected by the ripples of Mother Miranda’s experiments. With The Mold unleashed into the world and a new generation of bio-organic weapons under The Connection’s control, it’s clear that Mother Miranda is still the ultimate influence of Resident Evil’s world, even after death.
