The news that Voltron: Legendary Defender will end with season 8 later this year and the new season 7 trailer were released on Friday during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The first season premiered on Netflix in June 2016, and consisted of 13 episodes. Voltron is a reboot of the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion and the Voltron franchise. The series is the brainchild of DreamWorks Animation Television and is animated by Studio Mir, a South Korean animation studio also responsible for animating The Legend of Korra. It has run for six seasons so far.
The series follows Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk, and Shiro, the pilots of lion-shaped mecha. They are known as the Paladins of Voltron and when their mecha combine, they form the robot Voltron. The previous seasons followed the pilots along with Alteans Allura and Coran as they battled the Galra Empire, a race of beings who have conquered and enslaved multiple worlds in the universe. The 6th and most recent season premiered on June 15. It saw Team Voltron forming a truce with Lotor, Prince and eventual head of the fractured Galra Empire only to be later betrayed by him. The season ended with the defeat of Lotor and the destruction of the paladins’ home, the Castle of Lions.

It was announced at Friday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel for Voltron: Legendary Defender that the series would conclude with its 8th season. The trailer for season 7 was posted by Nerdist. The 7th season premieres on August 10 with the 8th season set to be released later in the year. The new season will follow the pilots as they return to Earth to find plans to build a new Castle of Lions. Both season 7 and season 8 will have 13 episodes, similar to the first 2 seasons.
The panel consisted of executive producers Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, story editor Josh Hamilton, the voice of Coran Rhys Darby, the voice of Pidge Bex Taylor-Klaus and the voice of Lance Jeremy Shada. More will be learned about the pilots through flashbacks in the upcoming season. One of the bombs dropped at the panel was that it will be revealed Shiro Takashi, the pilot of the Black Lion and leader of the group, had a relationship with a man. Shiro had a rough time during the 6th season. In the first episode of season 7, which was screened at the panel, he is still recovering with Keith at his side.
For six seasons the paladins have fought against the Galra. The empire may be broken and Zarkon and Lotor defeated but the paladins aren’t in the clear yet. The trailer for season 7 shows that the Galra are still a formidable enemy. The paladins will have to deal with that along with new problems as they make the difficult journey back to Earth. With that return on the horizon it makes sense that the series will also be reaching its conclusion.
