No pop culture franchise is perfect and there are always going to be certain flaws. The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t exempt from this, as the comic book franchise has a habit of repeating certain mistakes. WandaVision is the first TV series for the Disney+ lineup of Phase Four, placing it in prime position to right prior wrongs.

The MCU has given fans over 20 movies. While there have been plenty of iconic moments, this next chapter needs to avoid the same mistakes the franchise always makes. Should they be repeated, then WandaVision probably won’t get to stand out as among the MCU’s best works.

10 Sacrificing Emotional Moments For Jokes

The MCU has been lauded for bringing a comedic flavor to the superhero genre; so much so, that for every powerful quote there’s been a funny one accompanying it. However, this has resulted in moments that take the impact away from what should be purely emotional scenes.

For instance, Star-Lord finding out Gamora was alive needed to be a genuine moment but was instead reduced to a joke when she kicked him below the belt. WandaVision will suffer if it follows this formula, as Vision’s death has been hanging on fans’ minds for years. Turning it into a joking bit would be the wrong move.

9 Separating Characters For Too Long

With so many characters, the MCU has made it a habit of separating them for so long that some haven’t even met across the entire series. This has also been seen with characters who have strong connections, such as Iron Man and Captain America not meeting in Avengers: Infinity War.

WandaVision can’t afford this mistake more, as the idea of Scarlet Witch and Vision potentially being separated for multiple episodes will mean that their eventual time together will be minimal. The series needs to reunite them from the start and present their separation through the use of flashbacks.

8 Setting Up Future Movies Or Shows

The MCU has developed a trend where every character’s arc, no matter how great, is dependent on the prior movie setting up the events of the next one. Seeing as how Scarlet Witch has been confirmed for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there’s a big chance WandaVision heavily plants the seeds for the movie.

This would be the wrong move, though, as WandaVision is being promoted solely as a vehicle driven by Vision and Scarlet Witch. Focusing on a future movie will cheapen the quality of the story here, much like how Avengers: Age of Ultron was lambasted for wasting time setting up Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.

7 Conversations Focused Mainly On Arguments

Before the two were officially paired together, Vision and Scarlet Witch were mainly seen either playfully bantering or having arguments over her house arrest by Tony Stark. The MCU usually has couples behaving like bickering teenagers in order to build up their romantic tension, but it’s been played out.

With the two leads already being separated by Vision’s death, it would be ridiculous for them to be shown as a squabbling couple. This applies to their interactions with the supporting cast as well since the MCU also places these characters as targets for the leads to make jokes about.

6 Sudden Love Interests

The coupling of Scarlet Witch and Vision has already been done so there’s nothing to do about it now. However, there’s no escaping the fact that their romance was very random. This has been seen before with couples like Bruce and Natasha and Peter and MJ.

Sure, some of these romances have been well received by fans, but it’s also a lazy way to make the viewer accept a new romance. WandaVision has supporting characters previously seen in films like Captain Marvel, Thor, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, and it would be ridiculous if these people are all of a sudden thrown into random romantic pairings.

5 Easy Villain Defeats

There have been so many villains in the MCU that they generally have to be ranked by Phases. Regardless, quite a few have been killed or defeated surprisingly easily, like Whiplash and Mar-Vell. It doesn’t matter if the MCU has tried to be spontaneous and doled out these defeats for shock value, as every easy victory has detracted from the integrity of the franchise.

WandaVision doesn’t have any clear antagonist in sight, which is why it’s even more important to have a legitimate battle with whoever they are. The idea of a sudden villain coming out of the woodwork, only to lose so easily, is a guaranteed way to make a joke out of a bad guy.

4 A Powerful Character Getting Nerfed

Before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Vision would have topped the list of most powerful characters in the MCU. Unfortunately, he was nerfed so hard in the film that he’s lost a lot of his credibility as a legitimate superhero.

The MCU has made the mistake of making heroes look very weak to build up villains, and the likes of Hulk, Thor, and even Doctor Strange can attest to this. WandaVision should present the conflict or weaknesses of its protagonists as a result of them lacking the mental or spiritual strength, rather than sacrifice their prowess with powers.

3 Avoiding Scenes Of Exposition

Contemporary culture has made the idea of exposition scenes sound like a cheap attempt at telling the plot, but this isn’t accurate. The MCU, in particular, makes the mistake of leaving out an awful lot of important information to avoid slowing the pace.

However, with WandaVision’s premise itself being such a mystery, there needs to be scenes where characters outright communicate the situation. It would help in making the viewer understand what’s going on instead of having them attempt to piece it together themselves.

2 Turning Relevant Moments Into Deleted Scenes

This might be a deliberate call from Marvel but it is a mistake as far as storytelling is concerned. The movies tend to bring deleted scenes that would have enabled the actual content to have far more context. Other times, the deleted scenes are even better.

The problem is that fans take to arguing over if these scenes are canonical or not. Some of them tend to bolster the films’ quality while others are in direct conflict with established continuity. WandaVision has to keep every event that is directly relevant to the leads in the final viewing, with only additional material like funny scenes left out for deleted content.

1 Focusing On Prior MCU Events In A Major Way

The lead-up to the conclusion of the Infinity Saga was such that major events were set up to culminate in Avengers: Endgame. However, this also meant that films like Spider-Man: Far From Home and Captain America: Civil War were directly tied to past events and suffered from a bit of an identity crisis.

In WandaVision, the connection to prior films should be restricted to conversation pieces rather than formulate the story entirely around older material.
