On the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series WandaVision, it has become abundantly clear that Wanda Maximoff might be the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe. While she started powerful in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she wasn’t fully powered in Avengers: Endgame, causing her to lose too much.
However, with her losses came anger that allowed Wanda to unlock powers no one knew she had. She created an entire town and is powerful enough to keep anyone out that she doesn’t want there and control everyone living in the town. While there might be other forces at work, Wanda is extremely overpowered.
10 Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants
In Marvel Comics, Wanda Maximoff is known as the Scarlet Witch, and she started her career as a villain. In X-Men #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Scarlet Witch made her first appearance alongside her brother Quicksilver in Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. At this time, she had limited use of her magical powers, but never at a level where she was truly a threat in her battles with the X-Men.
9 Captain America’s Avengers
After Magneto was out of the picture, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver became heroes rather than villains. In Avengers #16, the team was in turmoil. While Captain America was fighting villains on his own, his teammates decided they wanted to leave the team for a while. Before leaving, the team found three replacements in Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch. With the Avengers, Wanda soon grew into her powers and became more comfortable with her magic.
8 The Children’s Crusade
After the events of House of M, Scarlet Witch disappeared. Although some searched for her, most thought she was dead, including the X-Men, who wanted her to pay for stripping so many mutants of their powers. Her own children, Speed & Wiccan, found their mother in Avengers: The Children’s Crusade by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. She had amnesia and was living with Doctor Doom. By the end, she regained her memories and powers but was nowhere near the level she was when she ruined so many lives.
7 Ultimate Scarlet Witch
In the Ultimate Marvel world, Wanda had a new last name in Lensherr, and she was the daughter of Magneto and sister of Quicksilver. In this series, Wanda was very different, and she and her brother had a disturbing relationship.
She ended up joining the Ultimates, which often bothered Captain America due to how she dressed and how she carried herself. She was powerful, as she had magical abilities, but her main powers were probability manipulation, which was used by using math. She ended up dying when Ultron killed her.
6 Uncanny Avengers
After the Scarlet Witch returned to power following Avengers: The Children’s War, she slowly made her way back to acceptance by the Avengers. However, almost every mutant in the world still hated her for the events of M-Day. After Avengers Vs. X-Men, Captain America wanted to lead the world in dispelling its fear of mutants and created an Avengers/X-Men hybrid team known as the Uncanny Avengers. Wanda was part of this team and was regaining full use of her powers. However, she died once again when Rogue murdered her, mistakingly believing Wanda was betraying the team.
5 West Coast Avengers
The Scarlet Witch slowly became more and more powerful over the years she was in the Avengers. There were moments where she garnered great amounts of power almost to beat the Avengers when possessed by demonic beings. In West Coast Avengers, Scarlet Witch finally showed how powerful her magic was. It was here that she somehow became pregnant with Vision’s children and delivered the twins, Tommy and Billy, creating these children with a mixture of her magic and the influence of the demonic Mephisto.
4 Empyre
Scarlet Witch has always tried to do the right thing when she is in the right state of mind. However, as Doctor Strange has said more than once, he often needs to clean up her messes. In an immense show of power, Wanda tried to help the mutants as a way of atonement for her past when taking their powers.
In this case, she raised every dead mutant from the island of Genosha, bringing back legions of dead mutants at once. However, she messed up. Wanda was powerful enough to return them all from the dead, but they came back as zombies.
3 Avengers Disassembled
The first time that Scarlet Witch was shown to have powers greater than anyone could have fathomed came in The Avengers, and she destroyed the team, causing them to break up in the end. In this storyline, Wanda was by the pool with Wasp, and the winsome Avengers member mentioned Wanda’s twins, which had been wiped from her mind. The memories came back and drove Wanda crazy. She murdered Agatha Harkness and simulated an entire Kree attack of Earth that left Hawkeye and Ant-Man dead before Doctor Strange finally showed up to stop her.
2 2015’s Scarlet Witch
In 2015, Scarlet Witch received her first actual comic book series on her own. Created by James Robinson and Vanesa Del Rey, Scarlet Witch rewrote Wanda’s history, showed that she was from a linage of Scarlet Witch’s before her, inheriting her powers from her mother. It also brought back Agatha Harkness and allowed her and Wanda’s mother’s spirit to help her realize the true meaning of her powers. By the end of this series, Wanda had a strong grasp of her powers and was at her strongest while sane, making her a formidable hero.
1 House of M
Sadly, the strongest that the Scarlet Witch ever was occurred when she was completely insane. The House of M event came after “Avengers Disassembled.” Wanda knew she did bad and wanted everyone to have their best lives, so she changed the entire world. Every hero in the Marvel Universe changed, and everyone had a better life, with even the mutants living happily in society.
However, Wolverine realized something was wrong and knew that he needed to change things back to normal. By the time it was all said and done, Wanda said “no more mutants” and stripped 986,618 mutants of their powers in an event known as the Decimation, becoming the X-Men’s most hated nemesis.
