Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

Nickelodeon’s iconic orange blimp has carried some fascinating properties in its run. Over the past few years, they managed to produce a decent number of films, most of which have garnered mostly positive or mixed critical responses, but some have gathered cult followings. With that in mind, here’s a look at 10 Nickelodeon films and their averaged IMDb scores. And, of course, there is no chance that the infamous Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation will ever make this list.

10 Rugrats In Paris: The Movie (6.1)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

Of all the Rugrats films that were produced, it’s the middle child that gets the most acclaim this time around. Rugrats in Paris is, like every Rugrats film, a big adventure for little tykes, but the movie’s stakes and setting make it feel more like a film than its predecessor, the first Rugrats film. It’s also more solid, having a simple storyline and an arc making it more cohesive than its successor, Rugrats Go Wild!

Despite taking place in Paris, the film cleverly instead uses Japanese-centric scenery, characters, and culture to turn the over-done Paris setting on its head. It also deals with Chuckie’s feelings towards his deceased mother—always a tearjerker—and introduces his foster mother and sister who would be mainstays in the show.

9 Angus, Thongs, And Perfect Snogging (6.3)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

In what was Nickelodeon’s first PG-13 film, Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging was a pretty fun coming-of-age comedy. Based on a short series of books by Louise Rennison, the film focuses on a British teenager who’s going through the usual woes of puberty, social anxiety, parental clashing, and angst. The film tackles superficiality and self-confidence in a good manner, but the realistic approach to how teenagers act—at least, at a PG-13 level—is what makes the film really work.

8 Good Burger (5.7)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

It’s a film so bad it’s good… good burger, that is. Good Burger is less of a movie and more of a bunch of roughly-sketched scenes stuck together. Good Burger was based on the widely popular All That sketch—think Wayne’s World, but for kids. There’s no better word to describe the movie other than “surreal.” Somehow, Abe Vigoda (The Godfather) found a role in the film, the tone swings wildly from adult to downright childish humor, there are appearances from Shaq and Sinbad, and so on. Most impressively, there is a dance routine in an asylum in which the iconic George Clinton of Parliament-Funkadelic appears in and dances along to his own music.

The film is pretty aged with a lot of forced gags, but the lead performances from Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson, or rather, their chemistry, is the glue that holds the mess together. While Good Burger is somewhat of a fiasco, it’s pretty memorable in its quirkiness and has gained a cult following.

7 The Wild Thornberrys Movie (5.6)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

In The Wild Thornberrys (sic) protagonist Eliza had the ability to speak to animals, given to her after saving a shaman, but was told to keep the ability a secret. That included keeping her wildlife documentary producing family in the dark.

In the film, this issue comes to a head, while battling particularly violent poachers, who are setting up to slaughter a massive herd of elephants. The film’s analysis of the zany family and balance of action and comedy is a pretty solid entry for Nickelodeon’s filmography.

6 Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie (7.6)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

The first Hey Arnold! movie was pretty underwhelming. It played the usual “kids vs. greedy adults” trope of the 90s/2000s era and didn’t do anything vastly critical to further the series beyond a single kiss. In fact, due to the film’s mediocre commercial and critical performance, the sequel was canned, which was a shame, because it had been set up in an episode.

However, in 2017, The Jungle Movie finally managed to leave development hell and was produced and released almost exactly as it would have been in the early 2000s, years after the show had ended. Nostalgic fans of the show were relieved to finally have an old cliffhanger concerning Arnold’s parents resolved. This time around, as it was released on TV, the movie was much better received and even garnered an Emmy award.

5 Invader Zim: Enter The Florpus (7.5)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

Similarly to The Jungle Movie and perhaps secure thanks to its success, Enter the Florpus served as a callback to a show that had begun airing nearly two decades prior to the film’s release. The film focuses on the show’s previous heroic antagonist, Dib, and features Zim as the antagonist this time around.

Of course, in a show titled Invader Zim, the protagonist would be the baddie. Enter The Florpous is energetically and passionately animated and hasn’t lost an ounce of the rapid-fire comedy of the original show. In fact, it’s even better.

4 A Series of Unfortunate Events (6.8)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

In what was the first adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s—real name Daniel Handler—13 book-long series, Nickelodeon’s A Series of Unfortunate Events decided to tackle the first three books in the saga in just an hour and forty minutes. It’s a reverse Hobbit situation, and, amazingly, the film was terrifically successful in what it set out to do.

Jim Carrey stars as the eccentric and sinister Count Olaf, and it’s a role that fits him just right. The child-focused cast is also incredibly talented, and the film is dripping in atmosphere and careful design, quite faithfully to the books. Though it’s been overshadowed by the Netflix reboot, it would have been great to see more of the books enjoy an adaptation under the talented crew.

3 Nacho Libre (5.8)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

Nacho Libre has found a massive cult following online, with many common memes and references coming directly from the film. Jack Black’s wildly absurd performance as a priest-turned-luchador is hilarious. The film’s lowbrow and absurd comedy isn’t for everyone, but there’s no denying its place in people’s minds. Like many works of cinema, it was based on a true story and wildly blown out of proportion for the best results possible.

2 Rango (7.2)

Top 10 Nickelodeon Films (And Their IMDb Scores)

Rango is probably the least Nickelodeon-involved film on this list, but it needed to be addressed. It is one of the few non-Disney/Pixar films to win the Oscar for Best Animated Picture, and deservedly so—although Kung Fu Panda 2 was probably most deserving. Rango is a wonderfully animated Western that focuses on a pet chameleon who gets in way over his head and manages to become the sheriff of a Wild West town.

The film also reunites Pirates of the Caribbean alumni Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy as enemies yet again, since Gore Verbinski, director of the first three Pirates films, was the director for Rango, and the same blend of humor and action carried over.

1 The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (7.1)

Spongebob Squarepants is Nickelodeon’s flagship show, so it made sense that their best film would be The Spongebob Squarepants Movie, an epic odyssey between Spongebob and Patrick that teaches kids that it’s OK to be kids. The film was initially pitched as the series finale of the show, and creator Stephen Hillenburg certainly ensured it went out with a bang. Of course, the show is still airing to this day, has a Broadway musical, and spinoffs are planned, but the movie was truly the peak in terms of quality, not necessarily influence.

Just like the show, the film plays the naïve and loveable Spongebob against a plethora of colorful characters and situations. The humor is absurd and is akin to Pee Wee’s Playhouse for Millenials. The film has a touch of everything: appearances from tons of characters, cleaned up animation, a legendary appearance from Baywatch’s David Hasselhoff, a cover of Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock,” and a more subtlely hidden cover of Motörhead’s “You Better Run.” But best of all, it has a heart.
