What Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition Changes From The Original

Age of Empires is one of the most influential real-time strategy series of all time, and it’s had a profound effect on the genre as a whole. Microsoft has returned to the series in recent years with Definitive Editions of the first two games, and now Age of Empires 3 is next on the list.

Age of Empires 3 was already quite different from previous games, as it brought a wide array of changes and updates. The Definitive Edition remasters the game to modern standards and brings even more changes.

With Age of Empires 4 currently in development, Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition should give fans something to tide themselves over. Here’s everything the Definitive Edition changes from the original.

Updated Sound, Graphics, and 4K Capability

The most noticeable change in the Definitive Edition will, of course, be the graphical updates. The entire game features rebuilt 3D assets, making it practically look like an entirely different game. The game also features 4K capability, which will help give it that extra pop. The core assets aren’t the only thing updated, however, as the Definitive Edition will also come with an overhauled UI, enhanced audio, and a remastered soundtrack. It seems like Age of Empires 3 is getting an even bigger update than the first two games received.

Definitive Edition Adds Two New Game Modes and Cross-Play Multiplayer

On top of all the aesthetic updates, Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition adds two new game modes that shake up gameplay. The first is pre-made Historical Battles that put players on one side of a real battle. The historical battles, of course, all take place during the time period that Age of Empires 3 covers. The other game mode is a returning favorite from Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition called Art of War. These challenges are shorter than normal and focus on a specific aspect of the game’s strategy. The Definitive Edition also comes with full cross-play multiplayer, meaning players on Xbox One and PC can play against each other with no restrictions.

Definitive Edition Adds Two Brand New Civilizations

Perhaps the biggest change coming to the Definitive Edition is the addition of two brand new civilizations, the Incas and the Swedes. The official announcement says the Incas are a more traditional Age of Empires civilization, while the Swedes were known more for their innovative military tactics. With the two new civilizations, there are sixteen total civilizations in Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition. Here’s the full list for anyone unfamiliar.

Native American Civilizations Have Changes to Be More Respectful

The last change, and one that’s nice to see, is that World’s Edge Games is altering the Native American civilizations. In the announcement post, the studio says that they always strive to represent different cultures and peoples, and the Native American civilizations simply weren’t meeting its standards. Although the studio hasn’t said exactly what will be changed, it did work with tribal consultants to more respectfully portray the civilizations in the game.
