What Charlie Hunnam Has Done Since Sons of Anarchy

Charlie Hunnam played the lead role in the TV series Sons of Anarchy, but what has he done since the show came to an end? Back in 2008, viewers were introduced to a peculiar motorcycle club in Sons of Anarchy, an action crime drama TV series created by Kurt Sutter and that aired on FX until 2014. Sons of Anarchy lived on for a total of seven seasons, and it was very well-received from the beginning, with critics praising it for its tone, the performances of its main cast, and how it addressed themes like racism and corruption.

Sons of Anarchy follows Jackson “Jax” Teller (Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, in California. The events of the series are kickstarted when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John Teller, one of the founding members of the club, in which he shared his vision and plans for the club, which were very different from those of the club’s current President (and Jax’s step-father), Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman). This sends Jax on a personal journey where he begins to question the club’s path and history, his relationships, his family, and even himself.

Although Charlie Hunnam wasn’t a newcomer when Sons of Anarchy began, Jax Teller was the role that made him a widely-known name and which opened many doors for him, mostly in the film industry, where he has appeared in various big projects. Prior to Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam’s biggest projects were the 2002 period comedy-drama Nicholas Nickleby (where he played the title role), the war film Cold Mountain, and Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi thriller Children of Men. In the realm of TV, his first role was in the British teen drama Byker Grove, and he later played Nathan Maloney in Queer as Folk.

Jax Teller didn’t take up all of Charlie Hunnam’s time, as he was able to appear in other projects while Sons of Anarchy was still airing. Hunnam appeared in the thriller drama The Ledge, the comedy 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom, and the crime drama Deadfall, but his biggest role was that of Raleigh Becket in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Once Sons of Anarchy came to an end, he reteamed with del Toro and played Alan McMichael in Crimson Peak (2015), Perry Fawcett in the 2016 adaptation of The Lost City of Z, and King Arthur in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legends of the Sword. After that, he played Henri Charrière in the biographical drama Papillon, released in 2018, and the following year he appeared in five movies: A Million Little Pieces, Triple Frontier, True History of the Kelly Gang, Jungleland, and he reunited with Guy Ritchie in the action-comedy The Gentleman.

Charlie Hunnam’s future projects will see him take over both the big screen and TV – first is the action-thriller Last Looks, directed by Tim Kirby and based on the book of the same name by Howard Michael Gould, in which Hunnam will play Charlie Waldo, starring alongside Mel Gibson, Morena Baccarin, and Dominic Monaghan. Then is the crime-drama TV show Shantaram, which follows a heroin addict who escapes prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. Charlie Hunnam has been able to separate himself from Jax Teller and Sons of Anarchy by taking part in projects from different genres and playing very different characters, and he will surely continue doing so for years to come.
