What Gotham Knights’ New Trailer Reveals About Its Story

WB Games Montréal’s upcoming DC video game, Gotham Knights, received a brand new trailer at last weekend’s DC FanDome event, giving fans their first look at one of the story’s main antagonists, the Court of Owls. Montréal had previously teased the presence of the Court prior to the official announcement of Gotham Knights in 2020, with the game’s reveal trailer from last year’s FanDome having shown off a brief tease of one of the Court’s assassins, a Talon, in action. However, this new trailer is fully dedicated to the sinister organization and reveals key details surrounding Gotham Knights’ story in the process.

Gotham Knights is a departure from Batman: Arkham, with the title’s premise revolving around the Bat Family protecting Gotham in the wake of the Dark Knight’s death prior to the story. Said announcement also revealed that Jim Gordon had died, and that it would be up to Batgirl (Barbara Gordon), Nightwing (Dick Grayson), Robin (Tim Drake), and Red Hood (Jason Todd) to stop Gotham’s villains – including Mister Freeze – from using the chaos to take control of the city.

Montréal had disclosed little in the way of new details in the months following Gotham Knights’ announcement, bar revealing that the title would be delayed until 2022 this March. The new trailer is still somewhat light on information and wasn’t accompanied by a full gameplay demo like the announcement, but it does provide a decent look at Gotham Knights’ Court of Owls and includes a few slight nods in the comics’ direction as well. The trailer also shows off Montréal’s new version of Penguin (no longer boasting the cockney accent from the Batman: Arkham series), who provides the creepy narration detailing the influence of the Court while being interrogated by Nightwing.

Gotham Is Still Mourning Bruce Wayne And Jim Gordon

What Gotham Knights’ New Trailer Reveals About Its Story

The latest trailer for Gotham Knights starts off with some shots of Gotham City, before cutting to memorials dedicated to Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon. The first trailer for Gotham Knights revealed that Commissioner Gordon had died an undetermined period of time before Bruce’s own death, with the Code Black message referencing how the Bat Family had been on poor terms with the G.C.P.D. ever since. The latest trailer not only provides a glimpse of Gordon’s memorial though, but also one for Bruce Wayne, which would imply that some time has passed since Batman’s death and Gotham Knights’ main story.

The initial reveal trailer seemed to imply that Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood would get to work immediately following Bruce’s death, but memorials don’t typically spring up overnight – at least not the kind seen in the latest trailer for the game. This could either mean that Gotham Knights will feature some sort of time jump during its story, or that it simply begins further away from Bruce’s death than what may have been initially suspected.

Penguin Teases The Court Of Owls’ Influence

What Gotham Knights’ New Trailer Reveals About Its Story

Penguin’s narration in the latest Gotham Knights trailer is ominous, and refers to the Court of Owls’ grip on Gotham City. Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo introduced the Court of Owls during their run on Batman, which started in 2011 as a part of DC’s New 52 reboot. In the series, Snyder and Capullo detail how the Court has been influencing Gotham throughout its entire existence, dating back to its initial founding as a city during the 19th century. The presence of the Court was alluded to in Gotham’s very architecture, something that is reflected in the latest trailer for Gotham Knights, with one shot showing Robin perched atop an owl gargoyle on a tall building.

This idea of the Court being baked into the very foundations of Gotham City is present throughout the new Gotham Knights trailer, with players being treated to shots of iconic Gotham locales featured in previous Batman games, such as Arkham Asylum. The first image of a Talon – one of the Court’s zombified assassins it uses to maintain authority in Gotham – literally emerges from a building, while all the confrontations between the Talons and the remaining Bat Family take place underground, which serves as a way of illustrating just how deep the Court’s influence runs, and how it was able to evade Batman for so long.

It’s fitting too that Penguin is the one to reveal this information to Nightwing in the trailer, as the Cobblepots were one of Gotham’s founding families along with the Waynes, Kanes, Elliots and Crownes, the lattermost of which were directly connected to the Court via William Cobb, one of its deadliest Talons who was also the great grandfather of Dick Grayson. Nightwing was destined to join Court of Owls in the comics, so it’ll be interesting to see if this is a thread that Montréal will pull on in Gotham Knights as well.

What Keeps The Talons Alive

What Gotham Knights’ New Trailer Reveals About Its Story

As the trailer begins to take fans deeper into the bowls of Gotham, it provides a brief glimpse of some tanks filled with green liquid. While they do bear somewhat of a resemblance to the Titan tanks from Batman: Arkham City, the likelihood is that this is the Court of Owls’ own version of Lazarus Pit technology, which it uses to keep its zombified assassins, the Talons, alive – hence their green glow in the trailer.

In the comics, the Court discovered a dionesium spring deep underneath Gotham and used it to create Electrum, which not only reanimated the Talons but also granted them enhanced abilities. The previous Gotham Knights trailer showcased hundreds of Talons locked in suspended animation, and it wouldn’t be surprising if players were tasked with destroying the dionesium in order to stop the Court from unleashing more assassins upon Gotham.

Red Hood Confronts The Court’s Leaders

What Gotham Knights’ New Trailer Reveals About Its Story

While the trailer for Gotham Knights shows multiple members of the Bat Family coming face-to-face with the Talons, only Jason Todd manages to meet one of their leaders, a figure wearing a golden version of the Court’s trademark Owl masks. This could be the Judge of Owls – a character introduced in Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Doomsday Clock series from 2018 – or just one of the other members of the Court’s leadership. The Court’s average membership is very much alive and differs greatly from Talons, some of whom exhibit owl-like features and characteristics.

Although it’s still unclear what the Court of Owls is planning in Gotham Knights, the difference between the leadership and the Talons is made apparent in the most recent trailer, as it gives players their first look at the various enemy types the Court will send against them. A shot of Batgirl sees a creepy-looking Talon prowling overhead, while a later confrontation involving Robin sees a massive Talon wielding a club and shield.

The Court Of Owls May Target Alfred

One of the more unsettling shots in the latest Gotham Knights trailer appears to show the Wayne family’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, being targeted by the Court of Owls as he sits in a chair. It’s not 100% clear if it is Alfred, as the shot is top-down and doesn’t provide a look at his face, but WB Games Montréal has shown off an image of Alfred from Gotham Knights previously and the hairline does match up.

Further still, the location looks very similar to the Belfry seen in Gotham Knights’ reveal trailer, with multiple monitors in view. Given the Belfry will serve as a base of operations for the Bat Family in Gotham Knights and that Alfred will continue to assist them, it would make sense for the Court to target it.

Apart from those details though, the latest trailer for Gotham Knights continues to keep much of the story under wraps. WB Games Montréal hasn’t revealed much else apart from the game’s initial premise, and the latest trailer does a good job of teasing the Court without revealing any pivotal plot points. Expect more information surrounding Gotham Knights to come in the months ahead though, and for more villains to join Mister Freeze, Penguin, and the Court of Owls.
