What Happened To Charisma Carpenters Lacy After The Expendables 2

Charisma Carpenter’s Lacy played a supporting role in the first two movies, but what happened to her after The Expendables 2? The earliest iteration of The Expendables started life as a gritty action thriller following a team of hardened mercenaries, but as action icons like Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren joined the cast, it evolved into more of a tribute to the action cinema of the ’80s. This resulted in the somewhat odd tone of the original film, which was a mix of cheesy action and dialogue with more serious moments, like Mickey Rourke’s moving monologue about failing to save a suicidal woman.

By The Expendables 2, the series had fully embraced a goofy tone, making meta gags about its ironic cast and generally refusing to take itself seriously. The third movie unwisely attempted to gear itself towards a broader audience, bringing on younger cast members while adopting a PG-13 rating. This move did not sit well, with the sequel receiving the worst reviews of the franchise in addition to grossing less than the second entry. The upcoming Expendables: A Christmas Story is set to right the ship, and will reportedly aim for an R-rating and focus on a smaller ensemble than the more bloated cast list of The Expendables 3.

The Expendables is very much a macho franchise, and while it’s featured some female action heroes played Ronda Rousey or Yu Nan, female characters have rarely played key roles. One of the most notable was Charisma Carpenter, who played Lacy, the girlfriend of Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas. They are estranged in the original when she leaves him for another man due to Lee always being on missions, though he later beats up her new love interest after he hit her. In The Expendables 2, Lee and Lacy are engaged – despite Sylvester Stallone’s Barney advising Lee against it – but despite seeming very much in love, Lacy is never seen again beyond the second movie, which might be partly explained by the sequel’s audio commentary.

Carpenter doesn’t appear in The Expendables 3, nor is Lacy mentioned. It also seems unlikely she and Christmas got married, as the third movie does not indicate the two being together. While no mention is made of it in the movies, Expendables 2 director Simon West revealed in his commentary that Statham’s Christmas was supposed to reveal to Barney in the final scene he had broken up with Lacy over the phone. This scene was trimmed from The Expendables 2 final edit, likely to leave room open for Carpenter’s Lacy to return in part three, but given how overstuffed the threequel became, she didn’t appear.

Expendables: A Christmas Story – which is basically The Expendables 4 – might address this, but Carpenter isn’t (currently) listed as a cast member. If Lacy isn’t mentioned in the sequel, then the likely explanation is that, like the aforementioned deleted scene from The Expendables 2, Lee split with her to continue his life as a mercenary.
