Would Hulk Survive The Marvel Zombie Attack

Warning! Contains spoilers for Marvel’s What If…? episode 5.

After episode 5 of What If…? season 1, questions remain over whether the Hulk could survive a zombie apocalypse. Although the show provides plenty of clues, there is nothing. immediately definitive. However, if you add up all the clues, the evidence suggests that Bruce Banner’s radioactive green alter-ego is made of much sterner stuff than many of his Avengers teammates.

Not for the first time this series, What If…? episode 5 revels in the deaths of Earth’s mightiest heroes. Over the course of the show, a viral zombie outbreak claims the lives of iconic characters such as Captain America, Iron Man and Doctor Strange. Eventually, the entire world falls to the plague, save for a few pockets of resistance. Even Banner himself is initially forced to flee in the face of the superpowered zombies, before teaming up with the likes of Hope van Dyne, Spider-Man and Bucky Barnes.

Given that he runs away when first confronted by the zombies, it might seem clear that neither Banner nor the Hulk could survive the zombie attack. However, several clues throughout the episode suggest that, contrary to his initial reaction, the Hulk would be one of the few Marvel characters capable of surviving the outbreak. In fact, although the hints are subtle, What If…? episode 5 actually makes it explicitly clear that Hulk would be ok.

The most telling moment in the episode comes as a zombie Scarlet Witch attempts to attack the surviving Avengers’ jet before take off. As Banner opens the door to the hangar, Scarlet Witch launches herself at him, sinking her teeth into his arm. As is made clear throughout the episode, this would normally cause a zombie transformation. However, Banner’s arm automatically turns into its Hulk state, shielding him from harm and preventing both Banner and Hulk from becoming infected. This reveals two things – first, that the Hulk is impervious to being bitten by a zombie; second, that Banner will automatically be protected by the Hulk regardless of whether or not he’s expecting an attack. This suggests that both aspects of his personality would survive the apocalypse.

Another key piece of evidence comes when Banner decides to tackle the zombie horde head-on. As the jet takes off, Banner in human form charges straight into the crowd of advancing zombies. After being swarmed by flesh-eaters, he eventually bursts forth in Hulk form, before fighting Scarlet Witch hand-to-hand. Given the speed with which other characters transform in the episode, it seems likely that if it was possible for Hulk to turn by any means, being covered by a mass of biting, drooling zombies would be the ultimate acid test. The fact that he passes without transforming speaks volumes about Hulk’s true strength.

As has been made clear during other episodes, Hulk is certainly not indestructible. After all, during episode 3, a murderous Yellowjacket was able to explode him from the inside out. However, when it comes to zombies, all the evidence suggests that Hulk remains the strongest Avenger, even in the What If…? alternate universe.
