What Mulans Box Office Means For Movies Releasing On Disney

After a couple of delays, Disney’s live-action version of Mulan was released on Disney+ under special conditions – and here’s what its box office numbers mean for other movies potentially releasing on Disney+. The coronavirus pandemic forced theaters all over the world to close and studios to delay and reschedule the release date of their movies, and Disney was no exception.

The Mouse House released Frozen II on its own streaming platform, Disney+, before planned and Onward was released digitally two weeks after its theatrical release, arriving at Disney+ the following month. Some of the studio’s most important releases of the year, most notably Black Widow, have been pushed back several times as Disney wants them to be properly released in theaters, whenever that’s possible. Others, however, did get their 2020 release but not as expected, as was the case of Mulan, which found its home on Disney+ but at a price.

Disney+ subscribers can now watch Mulan from the comfort of their homes but have to pay $29.99 in order to do so. Because of this, Mulan’s box office numbers are different from what they would have been had it been released theatrically, and even if they’re low, they don’t necessarily mean the movie was a failure. Mulan got mostly positive reviews, though most criticized its story, and even though it bombed in China due to how it handled cultural elements, it has done fairly well with the Disney+ audience. Subscriptions increased and on its opening weekend, it made a total of $35.5 million. This amount is entirely net profit for Disney as the studio didn’t have to pay distribution fees, and while it won’t break-even, it’s still a success for the studio, more so when taking into account the special circumstances surrounding Mulan’s release.

Mulan was, in a way, an experiment to see how viable it could be for Disney to release its 2020 movies on Disney+ instead of keep delaying them and with that lose more and more money. Although there are still a couple of movies waiting to get either a 2020 or 2021 release, the biggest titles on Disney’s list are Marvel’s Black Widow and Pixar’s Soul. Like any other movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a big-budget involved in the making of Black Widow, and as much money as the studio is losing every time its release date is pushed back, dropping it on Disney+ is still not a possibility, simply because there’s a lot to lose, even if many fans wouldn’t mind paying to watch it. Soul, on the other hand, seems like the most likely to get a Disney+ release rather than a theatrical one.

Soul was originally scheduled for a June 2020 release and was later pushed back to November. This slot was originally reserved for Raya and the Last Dragon, which was then delayed to March 2021. Although Disney has been making more changes to its schedule – as happened with Black Widow, which now has a May 2021 release – Soul’s November release has stayed, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the Mouse House decides to keep that date but send the movie to Disney+ instead (with Raya and the Last Dragon also keeping its new release date) – after all, it has already proved that this is a profitable move, and as Pixar’s original movies are more popular than live-action remakes, Soul could do better than Mulan did.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, Disney and the rest will have to continue rearranging their plans and considering other alternatives, as theatrical releases might be less profitable than streaming ones, as seen with New Mutants. Mulan set an example for Disney, proving that a Disney+ release can be somewhat successful, and the studio might follow this model in the near future.
