Wonder Womans Mother Was Her First Major Villain

Warning: contains major spoilers for Wonder Woman #777!

In the latest issue of Wonder Woman, the titular hero gets her first villain, and it is a very unexpected one. Wonder Woman #777 continues the story of young Diana and her quest for truth. Her mother, Hippolyta, has been hiding the truth from her, but now Diana knows and she isn’t happy.

Young Diana has been discovering the secrets of the Amazons’ history for several issues. What began as a missing text became an ordered revision of the warriors’ past – and the culprit has finally been revealed. However, simply knowing who is responsible for these actions is not enough. Now that young Wonder Woman knows who is responsible, she is ready to confront them.

Wonder Woman #777 contains the story “Young Diana in Truth Hurts” by the creative team of Jordie Bellaire, Paulina Ganucheau, Kendall Goode, and Becca Carey. Diana has finally uncovered part of the truth, though there is even more than she doesn’t know that she learns about in this issue. At this point in the young Amazon’s life, she has not left Themyscira, and she has not yet learned very much about the world. She has yet to take up the Wonder Woman mantle, but even before doing so – she already finds herself with a villain to face: her mother, Hippolyta.

After finding out her mother hid the truth from her, Diana is understandably upset. She has been taught to be virtuous, but her mother has spent years lying to her. On the way to the important confrontation, she can’t help but think about how big of a betrayal this is. Diana is familiar with numerous stories about “villains and traitors,” but now she feels like she is living with one. After all, heroes wouldn’t lie and they wouldn’t betray those they love, would they? The secret Diana discovered was about the compassion that men can have. What could be so wrong about that? Unknown to the heroic youth until this issue is that men were cruel to the Amazons – even hurting Antiope, one of DC’s most well-known Amazonian warriors. As of yet, she hasn’t appeared in this story, though the reason for that may be upcoming. The extent of her pain is yet to be revealed, though it must have been immense for Hippolyta to hide it away for so long.

Diana has not yet become the hero she will be known as in her future, but already she is facing a villain of her own. Regardless of the reason for hiding this story, Hippolyta did not trust her daughter or sisters with the truth. This is particularly dishonest since the Amazons highly value truth; one of Wonder Woman’s most iconic weapons is the Lasso of Truth, after all. While lying may not be the best path to take, Hippolyta did what she thought was right. Now, Diana is the one who has to adjust to decide what values she will uphold in the future. Wonder Woman has to consider if it is okay to hide the truth if there is suffering within it. Is it better to hide away pain than to face it directly? Is her mother really the villain she has come to believe she is with this discovery? Wonder Woman’s first – and briefest villain – may be Hippolyta, but her bravery and willingness to fight for what’s right are beginning to take shape for the future thanks to this betrayal.
