WARNING: The following contains spoilers for What If…? Season 1, Episode 2, “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord,” streaming now on Disney+.

After an earthbound season premiere, the second episode of Marvel’s What If…? turns to the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Exploring a universe in which Guardians of the Galaxy’s Yondu Udonta picked up the young would-be Black Panther, T’Challa, rather than Peter Quill, What If…? episode 2 introduces audiences to a very different version of the MCU’s larger cosmos. The lofty ideals under which the young prince had been raised make him a far more noble and influential Star-Lord than Peter Quill has been in the MCU’s main timeline. One of the first signs audiences get of the respect T’Challa’s Star-Lord commands comes when he encounters Ronan the Accuser’s enforcer, Korath.

Korath was originally introduced in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where he was seen working as muscle for Ronan, who served as the film’s primary antagonist. While Korath met his demise at the hands of Drax the Destroyer in this film, he later reappeared in 2019’s Captain Marvel, which was set around 20 years prior to Guardians. His appearance in Captain Marvel revealed Korath’s role in the Kree military unit, Starforce, before he served Ronan. However, over the course of these two appearances, Korath’s character received little exploration and he spent most his time relegated to the role of stony-faced muscle for larger villains. That all changes in What If…?.

What If… Gives Korath More Personality in One Episode Than He Had in Two Movies

Korath’s introduction in “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord” mirrors his original introduction in Guardians of the Galaxy. Like Peter Quill in the opening to Guardians, T’Challa is seen breaking into the Temple of the Power Stone on the planet Morag. When he takes the orb containing the Power Stone, Korath arrives, holding him at gunpoint and demanding to know his identity. However, whereas Quill’s introduction as “Star-Lord” was met with bewilderment from Korath, when T’Challa unmasks, the Kree enforcer immediately begins singing his praises. Not only has Korath heard of this version of Star-Lord, he’s a fan. The result is an outpouring of emotion and sincerity never before seen in any of Korath’s live-action appearances.

In this reality, Korath is so in awe of Star-Lord, he asks if he could join his team of Ravagers. While T’Challa initially turns him down, after their skirmish, he decides to bring him aboard after all. It’s not hard to see why Korath has such a different response to T’Challa’s Star-Lord -than Peter Quill’s, who lived as a lowly spacefaring outlaw only out to make a quick buck for himself.

T’Challa has become something of a galactic Robin Hood who “steals from the powerful, gives to the powerless,” as Korath himself puts it. With his gracious manner and gift of diplomacy, T’Challa has even convinced the Mad Titan, Thanos himself, to go straight and join his crew. When Korath joins T’Challa and his allies, he is full of questions about Star-Lord’s countless legendary feats and by the end of the episode is proudly bragging to anyone who will listen that he and Star-Lord are “best friends.”

By having Korath become the newest member of T’Challa’s team of Ravagers, the episode turns him into the audience’s entry point to this alternate reality. The ins and outs of this Star-Lord’s adventures are revealed through Korath’s eyes, his obsession with the now-legendary hero filling him with a life not seen in his past appearances as little more than a punching bag for the Guardians and Captain Marvel. Amongst T’Challa’s many admirable feats as Star-Lord — including setting Thanos, Nebula and the Ravagers on brighter paths and saving Drax’s homeworld and family from destruction — bringing out Korath’s personality may not seem as remarkable, but it certainly shouldn’t be dismissed.
