What If Supermans PARENTS Came To Earth With Him

The origin of Superman is a story many people are familiar with, regardless of how big a fan they are of the superhero genre in general. Born on the dying alien world of Krypton, Kal-El’s parents send him on a rocket alone to another world, so that he might have a chance at life. Landing on Earth at the farm of simple farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, Kal-El was adopted and brought up as a human named Clark. However, the Earth’s yellow sun grants Clark with incredible powers and gifts, which he uses in adulthood as the superhero known as Superman. However, what would it have looked like had Kal-El’s biological and Kryptonian parents been able to join him on his journey to Earth? DC’s Elseworlds comic, The Last Family of Krypton, has the answer.

Elseworlds is a unique banner under the DC comics line, whose stories are told separate and outside of the main established DC Universe continuity in order to answer theoretical questions of curiosity, such as this one. (Marvel Comics carries a very similar banner, known as What If…?) Other notable Elseworlds stories include Gotham by Gaslight, imagining if Batman had operated in Victorian London and was hunting Jack the Ripper, Kingdom Come, which featured the superheroes of the future as more aggressive and violent than the classic heroes of today, and Superman: Red Son, which explored an alternate reality where Kal-El landed in Soviet Russia rather than Kansas.

The Last Family of Krypton, however, is absolutely worth noting as it shows what happens to Earth when not just one Kryptonian lands on Earth, but an entire family. Superman alone shook the very status quo for Earth in the main DC Universe: a being with near godlike powers, seen by many as an incredible savior and to others a veritable and insurmountable threat. At the onset of the series, Jor-El and Lara, Kal’s parents, both desire peace and prosperity, not just for themselves but also for their newly adopted home. While Lara seeks to lift Earth into a higher plane of spiritual and philosophical thinking, Jor-El is determined to protect the Earth at costs, so that it won’t befall the same fate as Krypton. At Lara’s urging, Kal-El’s upbringing is still aided by the Kents, having been chosen by Lara to help Kal experience life as both Kryptonian and human. Jor-El and Lara also have more children, twins that only carry half the abilities of a normal Earthbound Kryptonian, having been conceived on Earth.

The Family of El also has a profound effect on the superhero community, indirectly inhibiting their existence entirely. Jor-El’s science saved Green Lantern Abin Sur, meaning that Hal Jordan was never granted his ring. Lara saves the Wayne family from Joe Chill which negates any motivation for Bruce Wayne to become Batman. Oliver Queen was saved from the island he was stranded on much earlier thanks to Jor-El’s security drones, meaning he never gained the skills or trails that would have molded him into the Green Arrow. The El twin children played in the lightning storm, blocking the lightning strike that would have struck Barry Allen and made him The Flash. When the Guardians of Oa make Jor-El aware of this and that he is inadvertently stunting the growth of the Earth by making them overtly dependent upon him, Jor-El dismisses their concerns, saying that he will be all the protection Earth will ever need.

Despite this, some things never change. As Kal-El grows up, he determines to become Superman and seeks to help all those he can. While Lara encourages him, Jor-El disapproves. He wishes that Kal would apply himself to “grander” pursuits, and tells Kal that he wished more for him than his chosen path. However, that all changes when Lex Luthor inevitably turns evil, seeking to undermine Jor-El. Lex had been an employee of JorCorp, Jor-El’s company for scientific advancement. He had essentially been viewed by Jor-El as a surrogate son. However, Lex Luthor could never be in the shadow of a Kryptonian, no matter which El it is. Lex’s betrayal would have ruined him and destroyed countless lives. However, thanks to Superman, Lex is stopped and the day is saved. Jor-El then realized what his actions have wrought, and determines to leave the world-saving to his son from now on.

The Last Family of Krypton is incredibly dynamic. Much of the miniseries focuses on Jor-El, and his paranoia that Earth would meet the same fate as Krypton. This inevitably causes problems and deviations to the timeline of what fans know the DC continuity to be. What’s even more interesting is this idea that fate eventually causes a course correct. By the miniseries’ end. The Family of El is more diminished and reserved, with Superman as the only true superhero, as is typical. The series ends with this fun nod to the 1978’s Superman film with a line from Marlon Brando’s Jor-El: “The son becomes the father. the father becomes the son.” The line is even more poignant especially concerning this particular story concept. All in all, The Last Family of Krypton is a wonderful alternate take on the Superman origin.
