Tony Stark might be a genius, but that doesn’t mean he can’t still learn something from the Avengers. Although Tony undergoes his first major shift in personality during Iron Man, his superhero origin story, he continues to grow and change as he works with other members of the Avengers. Tony’s existence as Iron Man is defined by his interactions with the team. His decisions throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe are affected by each of them at one time or another.

As Iron Man, Tony is on a mission to make amends. After his kidnapping in Afghanistan, Tony trades in his carefree, playboy lifestyle for a life of philanthropy, determined to destroy his legacy as a warmonger. As Tony takes up his superhero mantle, he decides to try and leave a better legacy as Iron Man . This personal character arc continues throughout the MCU, eventually culminating in Tony’s death. But as one of the central members of the Avengers, Tony also influences and is influenced by Captain America, Bruce Banner, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye.

Becoming Iron Man doesn’t rid Tony of weaknesses. He is still a bit of a maverick, disregarding the advice of others and jumping from task to task. As Iron Man, Tony can be closed off, arrogant, and occasionally selfish. It’s in these areas where other members of the team strengthen Tony. Steve Rogers teaches Tony how to work as part of a team. Bruce becomes his friend. Thor teaches him humility. Natasha teaches him mission focus, and Clint shows him that having a family is possible.

Captain America

What Iron Man Learned From Every Avenger

When Tony Stark and Steve Rogers first meet in The Avengers, they don’t get along. Steve’s righteous belief that he’s always doing the right thing is the opposite of Tony’s flawed but well-meaning approach to saving the world. Where Steve doesn’t seem to have any personality defects, Tony uses his weaknesses as a shield, putting on a display of sarcasm and carelessness to hide how emotionally invested he is in the situation. Soon after meeting, Steve confronts Tony, saying he doesn’t think there’s anything more to Iron Man than his genius inventions — that the man himself is not a true hero, someone who is willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

Captain America is proved wrong when Tony sacrifices himself to save New York City, flying a nuclear missile into the wormhole at the end of the Battle of Earth. Sacrifice is not a quality Tony learns from Steve, however, but a continuation of his previous character development. As the audience sees in Iron Man, Tony is willing to give up his fame, fortune and even his life if it means correcting his mistakes. Tony’s character arc continues throughout the Avengers franchise as Pepper tries to get him to give up being a superhero and Tony’s guilt drives him to keep making amends. It concludes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, when Tony decides to rejoin the team in their mission to save the world — risking the life of his daughter Morgan — and ultimately Tony sacrifices himself to destroy Thanos.

What Tony truly learns from Steve is teamwork. Iron Man tends to be a lone wolf, making decisions and acting alone. Instead of trusting his teammates to help and support him, Tony relies on his own smarts and skills to keep him alive. When faced with larger threats, however, this doesn’t work. In The Avengers, Tony learns to work with Steve to fight the Chitauri, following his orders and contributing suggestions to the group, and relearns this lesson in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame. As much as Iron Man may want to avoid involving other people, it’s only with the help of the team that he can defeat Ultron and Thanos.

Bruce Banner

What Iron Man Learned From Every Avenger

If anyone is Tony’s true equal in The Avengers, it’s Bruce Banner, the genius physicist who occasionally loses control and turns into a “giant green rage monster.” When Tony and Bruce first meet, Tony has more to teach Bruce than the other way around. As Bruce is struggling to suppress his rage and power, Tony advises him to embrace the Hulk in an effort to control the beast, the same way Tony embraced his war injury and learned to turn it into a strength. Bruce takes this lesson to heart, eventually learning to accept both sides of himself and becoming Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame.

What Tony learns from Bruce is that he’s not always the smartest or most powerful person in the room. In Bruce, Tony finds a friend, someone who is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with him when he thinks Tony is wrong. Bruce is one of the only people who can truly challenge Tony on his own turf, arguing with him in the lab. Although Bruce Banner often gets dragged into Iron Man’s scientific shenanigans, helping him in Avengers: Age of Utron, Tony respects his opinion and intellect. Bruce’s hesitation may have Tony second-guessing his own decisions.

Bruce’s caution about his own power also sets an example. Tony is already careful about keeping his Iron Man suits in the right hands, but Bruce’s hesitation to unleash the Hulk teaches Tony a healthy respect for what he can do as Iron Man. As Iron Man, Tony is powerful and destructive. Although Tony is quick to use the suits early in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his opinion shifts as time goes on. In Captain America: Civil War, Tony’s guilt about the casualties of Avenger battles leads him to reconsider whether using Iron Man is the best thing for the world.

Thor

What Iron Man Learned From Every Avenger

Tony may tease Thor about his appearance and mannerisms, but the Asgardian’s mere presence teaches him a certain degree of humility. On Earth, Tony is a genius. In the wider universe, he’s merely one of many. Thor’s visit to Earth shows Tony that there are things he can’t control or understand, namely, the Infinity Stones.

Loki’s scepter, containing the Mind Stone, is what gets Tony into trouble in Avengers: Age of Ultron. As Iron Man tries to create artificial intelligence, he underestimates the power of the scepter. His experiments result in Ultron and Vision — both entities Tony can’t control. Although Vision becomes an ally, his creation is beyond anything Tony could have predicted. Thor’s world is one of gods and monsters, aliens with more power than Tony has ever touched. His presence on the Avengers shows Stark that there are things he should be afraid of.

Black Widow

What Iron Man Learned From Every Avenger

From the beginning, when Natasha and Tony first meet in Iron Man 2, the S.H.I.E.L.D. spy teaches Tony how to focus on a mission. Natasha, with the help of Fury and Coulson, is the one who gets Tony back on track to finding a solution to his arc reactor poisoning. When Stark is resigned to his imminent death, planning to spend the remainder of his life setting his affairs in order, Natasha and Fury kick him back into gear.

Natasha’s mission focus — her complete determination to succeed in her goal — is something she continues to teach Tony throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Where Tony has a tendency to get distracted by battles or bad guys, Natasha always has an eye on the endgame. She keeps her goal in mind and works out how to win.

In Avengers: Endgame, when Tony resigns himself to the new world Thanos created, Black Widow steps up and takes responsibility for protecting the universe, organizing the remaining Avengers. Despite her troubled past, she’s one of the most reliable members of the team, always ready to do her duty. Her death in the movie foreshadows Tony’s own choice — she knows she has to die in order to save the world.

Hawkeye

Tony and Clint Barton were never demonstrably close, but one thing the archer may have taught Tony is that superhero work can coexist with family life. Tony doesn’t have many examples of lasting relationships in his life, so when he meets Clint’s family in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it gives him a new perspective. Hawkeye is a member of the Avengers, risking his life with every mission, but he’s still able to build a happy home with his wife and children. Clint shows Tony that settling down is possible, a lifestyle that Tony eventually embraces with Pepper and his daughter – which is perhaps one of the most important decisions he made in his MCU career.
