Leslie Odom Jr. is best known for originating the role of Aaron Burr in the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, but he has since added to his impressive résumé. The actor/singer starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s play from January 2015 to July 2016, garnering a Tony Award as well as a Grammy Award for his performance. Odom’s portrayal as the Founding Father was recently seen by a new segment of viewers after a 2016 production of Hamilton was made available on Disney+.

Odom was born in Queens, New York, but he predominantly grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After graduating from a performing arts school, Odom attended Carnegie Mellon University. He made his official Broadway debut in 1998 by playing Paul in Rent. Odom appeared in a few more stage productions before relocating to Los Angeles to jumpstart his acting career. Following the big move, Odom obtained recurring roles in shows like CSI: Miami, Vanished, Big Day, Person of Interest, and Law & Order: SVU. In addition, the actor appeared in Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS: Los Angeles, Supernatural, and Gotham. In 2012, Odom notably starred as Declan “Winky'” Hall in the war film Red Tails. The next year, he acquired the lead role of Sam Strickland in Smash.

After Odom’s time as Aaron Burr in Hamilton came to an end in 2016, the actor split his time between TV and music. After releasing his first self-titled studio album in 2014, Odom released a 2016 holiday album titled Simply Christmas. That same year, the actor appeared on The Good Wife. He followed that up with the role of Dr. Arbuthnot in Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express before working on TV series like We Bare Bears and One Dollar.

More recently, Odom starred in the 2019 apocalyptic film Only and the biographical film Harriet as William Still, an abolitionist known as “The Father of the Underground Railroad.” That same year, Odom released his third album, Mr. Aside from Disney+’s release of the Broadway musical this year, Odom can be heard voicing a character in the animated musical sitcom Central Park alongside his Hamilton co-star Daveed Diggs.

This August, the Hamilton veteran will star in Music, the upcoming musical film written and directed by Sia. Odom will also serve as the lead in the Freeform series, Love in the Time of Corona, which co-stars his wife Nicolette Robinson. In addition to those projects, Odom has a handful of film projects in the works for 2021 and beyond. The actor will be seen in the highly-anticipated prequel movie to The Sopranos, titled The Many Saints of Newark. Aside from that, Odom has been tapped to star in John Ridley’s Needle in a Timestack, a sci-fi that also features Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo, and Orlando Bloom. Last but not least, Odom is set to portray Sam Cooke in Regina King’s upcoming film titled One Night in Miami.
