What Minecraft’s Rarest Biomes Are

Minecraft has more than 60 different biomes, some of which are much rarer than others. Here are the rarest biomes in the game and when they appear.

There are currently over 60 overworld biomes in Minecraft, with more consistently being added thanks to Mojang Studios’ updates, but not all equally common to encounter in the game. There are a few biomes that are exceedingly rare, so much so that players may not find them at all within their Minecraft world.

As of August 2021, there are specifically around 80 biomes total in the game, and more are on the way thanks to the upcoming release of Caves & Cliffs Part 2. The second half of the update will add new biomes such as Stony Peaks into Minecraft, and will additionally update existing biomes by changing up world generation. It’s unclear for the moment exactly how this will impact the spawn rates of some of Minecraft’s rarer biomes.

Most of the rarer biomes in the game are created when two more major biomes meet. For example, the rarest biome in the game – the Modified Jungle Edge – only spawns when a Jungle biome meets a Swamp Hills biome. The chances of this occurring naturally within Minecraft are somewhere around 0.0001%. Aside from that, though, there are quite a few other biomes that are nearly as difficult to encounter.

Rarest Minecraft Biomes – Bamboo Jungles

Jungles as a whole are some of the rarest biomes to be found in Minecraft, spawning much less frequently than many of the other major biomes such as Deserts and Plains. Two particularly noteworthy examples, however, are the Bamboo Jungle and Bamboo Jungle Hills biomes. This is one of the only biomes in which players can encounter pandas, one of the rarer mobs within Minecraft, and is a good source of bamboo that can be used in more complex Minecraft building projects.

Rarest Minecraft Biomes – Mushroom Fields

Mushroom Fields and Mushroom Field Shores are two more rare biomes in Minecraft. In fact, currently, they’re the rarest non-variant biomes to be found in the game. Usually, these appear as an island upon which mycelium can be found instead of dirt and grass. It’s also one of few areas in Minecraft where giant mushrooms grow naturally, and red mooshrooms and bats are the only two mobs that will spawn in these biomes.

Rarest Minecraft Biomes – Snowy Taiga Mountains

Although this may be changed once Minecraft’s mountains are overhauled thanks to the release of Caves & Cliffs Part 2, for the time being, the steep cliffs of the Snowy Taiga Mountain biome are about the third most difficult biome to encounter within the game. It’s worth noting that structures such as igloos, villages, and outposts don’t generate in Snowy Taiga Mountains, making them even more of an oddity.

Rarest Minecraft Biomes – Modified Badlands Plateau

The Modified Badlands Plateau is the second rarest biome in Minecraft, only falling behind the Modified Jungle Edge as previously mentioned. This biome features smaller plateaus than the standard counterpart, mimicking a more weathered environment, and is only present in about 1/5 of Minecraft’s challenging Badlands biomes which are in and of themselves relatively rare compared to the game’s more standard spawn areas.
