Little Nightmares is the perfect combination of horror and mystery. The game thrusts players into a vile world brimming with cannibalistic giants and mind-bending creatures that hide in the shadows. Just when the player thinks they have seen it all, they are shown something that answers some question about the world, but prompts many more as well.

The recent release of a trailer for Little Nightmares 2 has caused players to scramble, looking for more answers to what it all could mean. The first game was incredibly subtle with its plot, but players were given further hints to the broader world’s story in the game’s DLC, Secrets of the Maw, and the mobile title Very Little Nightmares.

The trailer seems to suggest that players will be exploring a whole new location and a brand new suite of enemies. There are few outright connections to the other games at this time, but there are a few hints about what types of answers players will be getting when Little Nightmares 2 finally releases. Here’s everything we know so far about Little Nightmares and what it might mean for the sequel.

Little Nightmares Story Ending Explained

What Little Nightmares Ending & DLC Means For Little Nightmares 2

At the end of Little Nightmares, players discovered that the game took place on a floating man-made island called The Maw. Throughout the game, enormous humanoid beings are seen climbing aboard the vessel and setting off. It turns out that The Maw is a place that appears in a different area every year, loads up with eager visitors and heads out to an undisclosed location in the ocean. By all accounts, the people who board The Maw are never seen again.

Visitors to The Maw are gluttonous behemoths that spend the entirety of their trip gorging themselves on meat. This meat is provided by equally revolting chefs who stalk the player at certain points in the game. If captured by the visitors or the chefs, the player will be immediately eaten alive. Over time, players come to find that they aren’t the only living victims of this horrid operation. There are, in fact, hundreds of children aboard The Maw, all being fattened up to be cooked and fed to the guests.

The apparent captain of The Maw is an illusive figure known only as The Lady. The Lady is tall, moves at a hauntingly delicate pace compared to the frantic creatures under her employment, and dresses in an outfit reminiscent of Japanese geishas. She also wears an expressionless mask at all times and has apparently destroyed all mirrors within The Maw accept for one.

The Lady is a formidable opponent within the game, as she has the power to instantly turn kids into small Gnome creatures that can be found compulsively working to run the engines of The Maw. When she uses this power, nothing but clothes are left behind, which could explain the mountains of garments found all over the game. Perhaps the biggest mystery of The Lady is her clear obsession with the character known as Six.

Little Nightmares: Six’s Identity & DLC Explained

What Little Nightmares Ending & DLC Means For Little Nightmares 2

Six is the yellow-raincoated character that players control throughout Little Nightmares. Six is a resourceful little girl who uses her wit to outsmart and escape the many horrors of The Maw. The small gnomes dotted throughout the game are often a helping hand to Six, but sometimes run away in fear. Six suffers from a strange, debilitating hunger that stops her in her tracks at various moments in the game. Near the game’s climax, a gnome attempts to give Six some bread, but Six devours the gnome instead.

This gnome is later revealed to be The Runaway Kid, whom players control in the DLC, Secrets of the Maw. The Runaway kid has an encounter with The Lady and is transformed into a gnome just moments before Six’s arrival.

The Lady seems to have pictures of Six all over the ship. This puzzled players until the release of the mobile title Very Little Nightmares. Players initially believed that the prequel game was also centered around Six, but came to learn that the game was about another girl who wore the same raincoat before Six found it. Six was witness to the tragic event in which a villain known as The Pretender chased the player character off of a cliff, into the water below. The Pretender appeared to have similar powers to The Lady, and the use of these powers resulted in the yellow coat floating to the surface. Six claimed this coat as her own in the game’s ending.

In the final showdown with The Lady in Little Nightmares, Six discovers the final mirror and uses it to injure The Lady. When The Lady sees her own face, it appears to cause her great pain. Six uses this to succeed, and in the final moments, bites into The Lady’s throat stealing her power away. The game ends with Six walking into a crowd of The Maw’s visitors and killing them all with this new found power as she heads for the surface.

What We Know About Little Nightmares 2

What Little Nightmares Ending & DLC Means For Little Nightmares 2

So far, players know that the location of the new game is called The Mainland and is depicted as a dark and gothic cityscape. The citizens of The Mainland are under the control of a Signal Tower and the Thin Man who operates it. The Thin Man appears to be the primary antagonist of the game this time around.

Players will be controlling a new character named Mono. Mono is a small boy who wears a paper bag over his head. This is said to be protection from a world that hates the sight him. Mono appears to have the power to travel between television sets that are found all over the map in strange places. Mono must team up with Six to stop The Thin Man and save Six’s life. Six is fading from life and needs to get to The Signal Tower to survive. There is something there that can help her, but little else is known about it.

There is also a new major antagonist known as The Teacher. She is a wrinkled lady who can extend her neck to reach kids who try to escape her sight. The Teacher holds a long rod that she may use as a weapon, and also has the ability to send hordes of porcelain doll students to attack the player. It is theorized that she is the mother of The Pretender, the antagonist of Very Little Nightmares, and owner of The Nest.

The Nest is where both Six and the protagonist of Very Little Nightmares escaped from. This would make sense, as the children found within The Nest were being turned into these clay dolls that are now seen in the Little Nightmares 2 trailer.

What Little Nightmares 2 Could Reveal

So far players know that Six got her raincoat from the girl at The Nest and that The Lady hung pictures of that girl all over her quarters. It is possible that they may find out more about The Lady and her relationship to this original child. It is still unclear what she thought about Six running around wearing the raincoat of this prominent child, or if she even realized that Six wasn’t the same girl.

The Pretender from The Nest has very similar powers to The Lady, being that people are destroyed leaving only their clothes. Maybe players will find out where these powers come from, and if Six was able to do the same things after Little Nightmares. The trailer for Little Nightmares 2 doesn’t depict Six using any of these new powers she has acquired, so players will have to wait and see if these powers could be the source of her illness.

The Teacher is likely related to The Pretender due to images found in Very Little Nightmares, along with the presence of these porcelain children. What relationship does The Teacher have to the original owner of the yellow coat, and what will she think when she sees Six? Did the Pretender survive the fall from The Nest in Very Little Nightmares, and will she make a reappearance?

Mono is a totally new character this time around. He appears to have the power to teleport using the television sets, but this is unconfirmed. If this is true, there could be a connection between him and The Thin Man who sends out the signal using TVs. Is The Thin Man his father, or are they related in any way?

Players definitely have a lot of questions following Little Nightmares and Very Little Nightmares. This trailer for the sequel looks quite exciting, so it will only be a short time before players can get some answers. Hopefully the secrets of Little Nightmares 2 will be cleared up very soon.
