What Red Dead Revolvers Main Character Could Be Doing In RDR3

Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption is one of the most popular franchises in gaming. However, Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2 aren’t the only games included in that series. Years prior, Red Dead Redemption was preceded by a game called Red Dead Revolver. Since then, Red Dead Revolver has been alluded to in both Red Dead Redemption games but it has never officially crossed over into Redemption territory. However, Revolver’s characters could possibly find themselves in Red Dead Redemption 3.

Red Dead Revolver is the original entry to the Red Dead series. The 2004 PlayStation 2-era shooter established many of the series’ trends that people identify with Red Dead as a whole. This includes the infamous Dead Eye system, which allows players to pick out specific targets to shoot in slow motion. The game’s plot follows Red Harlow, a young bounty hunter on a mission to avenge his murdered family. These events have been alluded to in the Red Dead Redemption series, but have never officially been made canon.

One probable reason Red Dead Revolver’s characters have never crossed over into Redemption’s plot is because Revolver is set years before its successors. It’s not by a small period of time, either. The Redemption games famously take place near the end of the Wild West in the 1890s-1900s. Meanwhile, Red Dead Revolver takes place decades prior, in the 1860s-1880s. Some of the characters shown in Red Dead Revolver could have shown up in Redemption, though they would be a bit past the prime of their youth. If Rockstar was to use any of these characters in Red Dead Redemption 3, the game would likely have to be another prequel.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Will Most Likely Be Another Prequel

If any of Red Dead Revolver’s characters did appear in this prequel RDR3 game, they probably would not be the main character. Rockstar has never been known for reusing protagonists, and Red Harlow accomplished his goals pretty thoroughly throughout Red Dead Revolver. There’s simply not much left for him to do. If Red Harlow were to make a grand return, it would be as a side character in another protagonist’s story. He would be a legend in the old west, but likely not one the players get to control themselves, much like Landon Rickets in Red Dead Redemption.

An easy workaround to this issue is that Rockstar could make RDR3 a Red Dead Revolver reboot. A grand majority of Red Dead Redemption’s fanbase likely hasn’t played Revolver, and – as with any AAA reboot or remaster – this would provide an opportunity for those fans to experience the series’ beginnings. Though it is alluded to, the story of Red Harlow isn’t exactly well-known. It also gives Rockstar the chance to improve on the original game. Red Dead Revolver is certainly overdue for a graphical upgrade at the very least.

In all likelihood, fans have seen the last of Red Harlow. Rockstar changed the series’ subtitle for a reason. Still, his reappearance would be an event that fans (especially longtime fans) would greatly appreciate. Red Dead Revolver may not be the smash hit that both Red Dead Redemption games turned out to be, but it was a solid title for its time and place and deserves to be remembered just as much as Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto games from the same era.
