What Song Maddox Sings In Old

At the beginning of Old, Maddox is happily singing along to “Remain” by the artist Saleka. The song starts off as a gentle tune that an 11-year-old is taken with because she’s got the voice to go along with it. However, Maddox’s mother Prisca is busy looking at her phone and feeling anxious about their family vacation to be soothed by the song or her daughter’s voice. That changes at the end, when a now-adult Maddox sings “Remain” again to Prisca, who is nearing the end of her life and has lost most of her hearing. In that moment, the song is comforting, a reminder of life and its enjoyable, if fleeting, moments.

Saleka wrote the song Maddox sings in Old at the request of Shyamalan, who is her father. According to the singer, Shyamalan gave her the script to read through and cited the inspiration being U2’s “With or Without You” for what “Remain” would be — namely, he wanted the song in the film to be the backbone of Guy and Prisca’s rocky love story. The song itself gives Old a full-circle story feeling by the end because the characters are in a very different place from the start of the film. Saleka says she included some of the sounds used by composer Trevor Gureckis to maintain a musical throughline for Old.

At the end of it all, Maddox singing “Remain” to her dying mother is heartbreaking and far more tragic when compared to the way she was singing it at the beginning of their vacation. There is a lot of anger and frustration simmering between the mother-daughter duo throughout the film. But as Prisca nears the end of her life in Old, all of that falls away and it makes for a lovely moment where the characters are truly realizing how short life can be and how quickly anger can dissipate when they all see the bigger picture. As such, “Remain” is more so a cornerstone of Prisca and Maddox’s bond, which then lends itself to Prisca and Guy’s shaky marriage and its effects on their family.

Writing and recording “Remain” for Old isn’t the first time Saleka has created music for one of her dad’s projects. She has also worked with Shyamalan on his Apple TV+ series Servant. What’s more, Saleka’s sister Ishana Shyamalan was a second unit director on Old and also worked with her father on the aforementioned series. Suffice it to say that Saleka working on the song for Shyamalan’s latest film makes its words and meaning for the characters all the more effective, both onscreen and off.
