What To Expect From Big Mouth Season 5

The Netflix original series Big Mouth will return for season 5, as the streaming service ordered three more installments ahead of season 4 back in 2019. Big Mouth premiered in September 2017, and Netflix has released each subsequent season approximately a year apart — although the debut of Big Mouth season 4 was understandably delayed, likely due to the widespread shutdowns in the industry.

Big Mouth is an adult animated comedy series that was created by Andrew Goldberg, Nick Kroll, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett. The series is a coming-of-age story that follows the experiences of a group of adolescent friends living in a New York City suburb, all struggling to navigate the difficult, and often embarrassing, experience of puberty. Goldberg and Kroll base the show on their experience growing up as friends in NYC; Kroll provides the voice for a fictionalized version of himself, while John Mulaney provides the voice of a fictionalized version of Goldberg.

Big Mouth season 4 continues the themes from previous seasons, including exploring self-love, acceptance, and cultural identity; however, the season offers fewer milestone moments for its main cast, instead focusing on various characters continued journeys of acceptance. Missy confronts her Black heritage, Matthew comes out to his parents, and Jessi struggles to acclimate to her new urban life and prestigious school. The season’s connective thread is largely to addition of a new antagonist: Tito the anxiety mosquito, voiced by Maria Bamford. Although Tito has largely been squashed by the season’s end, she will likely return in the future, along with the hormone monsters, Depression Kitty, and the other personifications of human experiences introduced so far in Big Mouth.

Big Mouth Season 5 Renewal

What To Expect From Big Mouth Season 5

In 2019, Netflix announced it had entered a production deal with Brutus Pink, the company formed by Big Mouth’s co-creators: Kroll, Goldberg, Levin, and Flackett, as well as producer Kelly Galuska. The deal effectively greenlit seasons 4, 5 and 6 for Big Mouth, as well as a spin-off series Human Resources.

Big Mouth Season 5 Release Date Info

What To Expect From Big Mouth Season 5

Nettflix has not announced a release date for season 5. In the past, Netflix has been consistent about releasing Big Mouth in the fall each year, with season 1 premiering in September 2017, and seasons 2 and 3 releasing in October 2018 and 2019 (along with a bonus Valentine’s Day special episode that dropped in February 2019). Season 4 became available in December 2020, slightly delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Viewers can likely expect season 5 to be available in the fall of 2021, since production should already be underway; however, Netflix may choose to continue releasing the series in December if the time of year proves favorable. The series may also be delayed by production of the spin-off series Human Resources.

Big Mouth Season 5 Story Details

Season 4 of the Netflix original show did not leave many questions lingering, but did set up several ideas that Big Mouth season 5 can develop and explore. In many ways, the season ended with a return to status quo: Jessi is back with her friends, Nick and Andrew are friends again, and disaster has largely been averted; however, the seeds of some plot developments were planted in the finale. Lola and Jay are broken up, with Lola furious and swearing vengeance. DeVon and Devin are broken up, potentially setting up Missy and DeVon’s unlikely friendship to continue. Aidan’s mother is still grappling with her son’s homosexuality, and the ultimate fate of Matthew and Aidan’s burgeoning relationship is unclear.

Likely, Big Mouth season 5 will continue to explore Missy’s self-discovery, while Jessi, Nick and Andrew all learn to use “Gratitoad” to help them overcome feelings of self-doubt and anxiety. Jessi and Nick obviously have feelings for each other — although one notably more so than the other — which is a storyline that will need to be resolved eventually.
