What To Expect From Dark Season 3

German-language sci-fi drama Dark will return to Netflix in 2020 with its third and final season – but what should fans expect from Dark season 3? Season 2, which premiered on Netflix on June 21, focused on the mysterious time-traveling group Sic Mundus looking to begin the third and final time loop which would set the world on an apocalyptic course. The younger version of Jonas was determined to figure out how to get back to his own time, and soon realized it would also be part of his mission to stop Sic Mundus in order to save those he loves.

In telling the story of four families who discover they are far more entwined than they initially thought, Dark has been able to build a sprawling, epic story which details just how complex time travel can be and how it can affect everyone. It would be easy to say Dark is simply a show about time travel. Admittedly, it is, but Dark is so much more complex and manages to break some key rules about time travel, including older selves not interacting with past selves and being careful what objects are transported through time to avoid any unnecessary paradoxes from occurring.

With Dark season 3 confirmed, here are all of the other details about the forthcoming season needed for those viewers eagerly awaiting the show’s return and looking to prepare for its return properly.

Dark Has Been Renewed For Season 3

What To Expect From Dark Season 3

Dark series creator Baran bo Odar confirmed on his Instagram that the series was renewed for season 3 would begin shooting on June 27. Season 3 will also be the final season. Dark was always only ever going to last 3 seasons, meaning it would mirror the three cycles of time loops seen in the show: the first time loop happened before season 1, the second time loop happened during seasons 1 and 2, and the third loop was initiated at the end of season 2.

Dark Season 3 Will Release in 2020

What To Expect From Dark Season 3

No official date has been confirmed for Dark season 3. In Odar’s same Instagram announcement wherein he confirms the next season is coming, he notes season 3 will be coming next year, in 2020. Since Dark season 1 was released in December and season 2 was released in June, there’s no discernible pattern that could help predict when season 3 will arrive. However, if filming has already begun on season 3 and is expected to finish by fall 2019, then the season could be ready to air by late spring or summer 2020.

Dark Season 3 Story Details

What To Expect From Dark Season 3

No official season 3 story details have been confirmed for Dark yet. Season 2 ended with yet another twist, revealing characters could not only travel through time but also through different dimensions. This was revealed when a second Martha hinted that she was from another timeline when she showed up to save Jonas from the Winden nuclear power plant meltdown and whisked him away to safety. The season 2 finale also saw the older Jonas take Bartosz, Magnus, and Franziska away from Winden before the meltdown with one of the two known time machines. Audiences have yet to see what time they all traveled to.

There are still plenty of other storylines and questions that need to be addressed in season 3, including what happened to young Elisabeth and her father, Peter, after they exited the bunker following the meltdown, did Katharina make it to 1986 so she could find Mikkel, and what will Adam and the rest of the Sic Mundus group do next with the final loop already initiated? Will they succeed with their war against time or will they be defeated by the younger Jonas and alternate dimension Martha?

Dark Season 3 Cast Details

Because time travel is fundamental to Dark, even those characters believed to be dead on the series could likely return in some way. Given this, it’s expected a majority of the cast will return including: Louis Hofmann as Jonas; Lisa Vicari as Martha; Andreas Pietschmann as older Jonas; Moritz Jahn as Magnus; Gina Stiebitz as Franziska; Paul Lux as Bartosz; Jordis Triebel as Katharina; Maja Schone as Hannah; Karoline Eichhorn as Charlotte; and Mark Waschke as Noah.
