What To Expect From Saturday Night Live Season 45

NBC’s Saturday Night Live has long been part of the network’s schedule, so when will season 45 premiere? Created by Lorne Michaels, the sketch comedy series has launched the careers of numerous mainstream stars since premiering in 1975.

Saturday Night Live is a 90-minute show divided up by numerous comedic segments. The program typically begins with a “Cold Open” that addresses current pop culture events, followed by an opening monologue by the host. Each week, a musical guest performs two songs, and the middle “Weekend Update” segment offers a satirical look at world news. Saturday Night Live season 44 consists of 21 episodes, bookended by headline appearances from Adam Driver/Kanye West and Paul Rudd/DJ Khaled. Colin Jost and Michael Che serve as head writers alongside Kent Sublette, and the duo have also anchored the Weekend Update segment since 2014.

Saturday Night Live has remained popular over the years thanks to its brand of provocative comedy, and the show has also polarized viewers with its heavy political commentaries. Here’s what to expect from Saturday Night season 45.

SNL Season 45 Cast

What To Expect From Saturday Night Live Season 45

Kenan Thompson remains the longest-tenured Saturday Night Live cast member (2003-present). In May 2019, NBC ordered a new series starring Thompson, The Kenan Show – which marks his third NBC project – but the comedian reportedly plans to remain on NBC’s iconic sketch comedy show. Last April, reports surfaced that Kate McKinnon had been mulling an exit from Saturday Night Live because of her impending contract expiration. Given that McKinnon has a new Hulu series called The Dropout, she may decide to devote her time to new projects after a full seven-season run on Saturday Night Live. McKinnon is one of Saturday Night Live’s most popular cast members, and has starred in feature films like Ghostbusters, The Spy Who Dumped Me, Office Christmas Party, and the upcoming Jay Roach drama Fair and Balanced.

During Saturday Night Live season 44, McKinnon and Thompson had the most screen time, along with Cecily Strong, Beck Bennett, and Aidy Bryant (who stars in the Hulu series Shrill). In contrast, Jost and Che had the least screen time as the Weekend Update anchors. Based on screen time alone, cast members Ego Nwodim and Chris Redd could either be on their way out or primed to take a heavier load. Meanwhile, we’ll have to wait and see if Mikey Day, Pete Davidson, Heidi Gardner, Leslie Jones, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, and Melissa Villaseñor make the cut for Saturday Night Live 45. Expect NBC to make official decisions during the summer months.
