What We Do In The Shadows Inspiration Is A Perfect Jackie Daytona Spinoff

The inspiration behind What We Do In The Shadows creates the perfect platform for a spinoff about fan-favorite character, Jackie Daytona. The FX comedy series was created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi and is based on the movie by the same name. The idea for the movie, however, evolved from a stage bit that the duo used to perform in which one would play a vampire stand-up comedian, and the other would act as a vampire heckler in the crowd, disturbing the comic’s shows for hundreds of years.

In the highly popular What We Do In The Shadows season 2 , episode 6, “On The Run,” Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry) goes on the run from Jim the Vampire (Mark Hamill), to whom he owes money. He reinvents himself as regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, the humble owner of a bar in Pennsylvania, and an avid supporter of the local high school volleyball team, before Jim discovers him and chaos ensues. Viewers fell in love with Laszlo’s alter-ego, Jackie Daytona, for his rugged charm, good nature, the ridiculousness of Laszlo trying to pass as a normal human, and the litany of subplots surrounding the character that never fully reached fruition.

While there are currently no plans for Jackie Daytona to appear in season 3, the initial inspiration for the series provides the perfect way to bring back the entertaining character, either in another episode or even through a What We Do In The Shadows spinoff show. Creating a Jackie Daytona spinoff in which he’s a vampire stand-up comic being heckled by Jim would be the perfect setup to bring back some of the best jokes from their first episode. When they initially meet, Laszlo doesn’t recognize Jim, who has been hunting him for hundreds of years, and later, when Jim encounters Jackie Daytona, he doesn’t recognize Laszlo, who has merely only added a toothpick and pair of blue jeans. The two What We Do In The Shadows characters acting as a vampire comic and heckler without recognizing the other could be an amusing callback to their first meeting. Even more hilarity could ensue once they do realize the other’s identity but are forced to remain subtle to avoid the mayhem that erupted last time at Jackie’s bar in What We Do in the Shadows season 2. It would also be highly entertaining to watch the two rivals somehow forced to unite for a common goal, their obscure devotion to a high school volleyball team.

The premise would also fit perfectly into the show’s current setup. With Laszlo having swindled Jim twice now, the two bitter rivals could take out their frustrations in the plausible arena of stand-up comedy without drawing too much attention to their jibes. A comic and a heckler are already two diametrically opposed forces, meaning the two secret vampire rivals could fill the roles seamlessly. It would be easy for the writers to work around the rest of the show as they did with “On The Run.” Even if Laszlo doesn’t run away again, he could have fallen in love with his new identity, as an ego like his is prone to do, and perhaps sneak away to Manhattan once a week to fall back into the role of Jackie Daytona, regular human comic.

The show’s initial inspiration is simply the perfect platform to resurrect the role of Jackie Daytona. It could just be for another amazing episode, but the possibilities that the character creates are certainly enough for an entire spinoff should the writers choose to go that way. Daytona garnered enough popularity in a single episode that, regardless of how he returns, his reappearance in What We Do In The Shadows season 3 would be celebrated.
