Wheel Of Time All Of Moiraines Powers & Limitations Explained

Moiraine showed off several of her abilities during the Trolloc attack in Amazon’s Wheel of Time show. Played by Rosamund Pike, Moiraine is leading the quest to solve the Dragon Reborn mystery in the live-action TV adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books. Thus far, she’s been positioned to serve as the show’s principal character.

In the world of the Wheel of Time, Moiraine Damodred is a member of the Blue Ajah, a faction of the Aes Sedai. In both the books and the Wheel of Time show, the Aes Sedai are an organization of women based in the great city of Tar Valon. Every member of the Aes Sedai possesses some degree of command over a force of energy known as the One Power. As explained by Moiraine in the TV series, certain people can tap into what they call the True Source and use it to channel the One Power. Whereas men use saidin, women draw upon saidar, the female half of the True Source. Unlike men, who are fated to go insane through their link to the One Power, well-trained women can become competent and powerful channelers.

One of these women is Rosamund Pike’s character, who has cultivated impressive skills with the One Power over the years. By carefully weaving the various threads (or elements) of the One Power, Moiraine has the capability to accomplish a long list of feats, some of which are for offensive purposes. Here’s every ability that Moiraine has access to thanks to the One Power in Wheel of Time.

Fireballs

A fairly easy weave for Moiraine (or any Aes Sedai) is the fireball. By channeling the Fire thread of the One Power, Moiraine can hurl devastating fireballs at her opponents. Quite a few Trollocs were victims of this attack in Wheel of Time’s series premiere.

Manipulation of Wind

Like most female channelers, Moiraine has a natural affinity for Air abilities. By weaving flows of Air, Moraine can summon potent gusts of wind strong enough to push down Trollocs. In one scene, she rescued Egwene (Madeleine Madden) and Nynaeve (Zoë Robbins) by using an Air weave to cut a Trolloc in half. Her manipulation of wind is so advanced that she inadvertently brought down the Winespring Inn by ripping away the foundations and pieces of the walls to use as weapons against the attacking Trollocs.

Manipulation of Earth

Men are typically better with Earth than women, but Moiraine is proficient in all areas of the One Power, including this one. While defending the people of Two Rivers, Moiraine telepathically lifted chunks of the ground and large rocks and threw them at the Trollocs. If she wanted to, she could have created an earthquake, but that of course would have put the villagers at risk.

Lightning

One of the stand-out moments of the Trolloc fight was when Moiraine called down a bolt of lightning from the sky. Since it combines threads of Fire and Air, this particular weave is slightly more involved than an earthquake or a fireball. Even so, it’s still a relatively easy attack for an Aes Sedai to muster with the One Power. Most Aes Sedai learn how to call lightning rather early in their training.

Healing

One of Moiraine’s most useful talents, Healing, was on display in Wheel of Time. With this power, Moiraine can immediately mend wounds, remove fatigue, and restore strength for both people and animals, but can only use this ability on others. Moiraine can’t perform Healing on herself and using it at all slowly tires her out and drains her energy with each use. When taking into consideration how complicated a weave this is, this limitation makes sense in Wheel of Time’s world. To use Healing, an Aes Sedai has to weave flows of Spirit, Water, and Air.

Manipulation of Water

The Water element wasn’t a factor in the Trolloc battle at Two Rivers, but it did come in handy when they had to cross the river in episode 2. To make certain that the ferryman wouldn’t lead the Fade and his Trolloc army to Moiraine’s group, she manipulated the water and created a powerful whirlpool that sucked in the ferry. She used the same weave in the book version of the story.

Cloud Dancing

In the Wheel of Time books, a Talent shared by some Aes Sedai is known as Cloud Dancing, which is a term that describes controlling the weather with the One Power. By her own admission, Moraine is more skilled than most Aes Sedai in regards to Cloud Dancing and can generate several effects with this ability, such as fog, snow, rain, and more. Moiraine hasn’t drawn on this Talent yet in the TV adaptation.

Balefire

One ability that Moiraine could have benefited from during the Two Rivers battle is Balefire, which is a significantly stronger version of fire. She’s likely to continue avoiding it in Wheel of Time, given that it’s a forbidden weave. It has so much destructive potential that it can damage the fabric of reality, better known as the Pattern. However, Moiraine – like her book counterpart – may break this rule under extremely dire circumstances. Any character eviscerated by Balefire can’t be brought back to life by the Dark One’s power. Killing someone with Balefire essentially erases them from existence to a point that some of their past actions are actually undone. That explains why Moiraine and other Aes Sedai aren’t allowed to use Balefire no matter how necessary it may seem.

Other One Power Weaves In Wheel of Time

Moiraine has employed dozens of simple weaves in the Wheel of Time books and is likely to use many of them in the show. With just a small exertion of her One Power abilities, Moiraine can place a finder weave on an object, which basically acts as a tracking beacon. She can also amplify the sound of her voice, briefly enhance her hearing, heat up (or cool down) the air around her, make light, and create illusions to disguise herself with a weave called Mirror of Mists. In addition to that, Moiraine can create wards to protect people’s dreams from being invaded by the Dark One’s minions. Also, it’s worth noting that Moiraine knows a few weaves that are unique to the Blue Ajah. According to her, these are well-kept secrets. One such secret weave allows Aes Sedai of the Blue Ajah like Moiraine to control swarms of insects. It’s rarely used, and may or may not make it into Amazon’s Wheel of Time show.
