One of the more memorable villains introduced by DC Comics in recent years is the Upside Down Man. First shown in the most recent volume of Justice League Dark, Upside Down Man leaves quite the impression thanks to both his creepy appearance and powerful dark magic.

While the Upside Down Man has only faced the Justice League Dark, he has already established himself as a dangerous and intelligent foe to the entire DC universe. As the Upside Down Man has only been around since 2018, not much is known about him. Luckily, this article will tally some things that readers don’t know about this creepy newcomer. Here are 10 things about the Upside Down Man that fans never knew.

10 The Barrier Around The Dark Multiverse Was Created To Imprison Him

Upside-Down Man was created at the beginning of time as the personification of dark energy. He found himself attracted to the large amount of dark energy found in the Dark Multiverse. During this time, his polar opposite Hecate came across him. While curious about an individual similar to herself, she was ultimately frightened away by his appearance.

This fear led to Hecate creating a barrier between the Dark Multiverse and the rest of the Multiverse to imprison Upside-Down Man. While this barrier worked for eons to prevent the Upside-Down Man from interacting with the rest of the Multiverse, recent events have greatly weakened that barrier.

9 He Indirectly Created The Gods

Hecate was heavily affected by her encounter with the Upside Down Man. To get the Upside Down Man out of her thoughts, she decided to observe the development of mankind on Earth. She becomes intrigued by mankind and give them some of her power. This sharing of power led to humanity gaining the power to shape the Realm of the Gods with their own beliefs.

This shaping of the Realm of the Gods would lead to the emergence of the various Gods seen in the DC Universe, such as the Greek pantheon. Due to this series of events being sparked by his encounter with Hecate, Upside Down Man is indirectly responsible for the Gods in the DC Multiverse.

8 He Has A Negative View Of Magic-Users

Upside-Down Man views magic as something that should be just shared only between himself and Hecate, as magic is their very essence. This leads to him viewing all magic-users as thieves that are using is something that is his without his permission. This explains why he’s a primary threat only with heroes associated with the magical aspect of the DC universe, and virtually non-existent to the rest.

This worldview also shaped the Upside Down Man’s plan of destroying magic by killing or corrupting every magic-user in the Universe. He also has a distaste for magicians that try to impose rules on Magic as he feels imposing order on magic is ultimately hypocritical.

7 He Can Be Reasoned With It

Despite him being the personification of the darker side of magic, the Upside Down Man is a creature capable of being bargained with. For example, he formed an alliance with the Egyptian sorcerer Nabu in his plan to destroy the Lords of Order. While both individuals do not trust each other, they both view the Lords of Order as hypocrites for trying to bring order to magic.

More recently, Upside Down Man made a deal with Wonder Woman. He would help Wonder Woman defeat Cirice if she would balanced magic in a way that the Otherkind could find purpose. The deal also states that if Wonder Woman failed to balance magic, Upside Down Man and the Otherkind would consume the Earth.

6 His Humanoid Appearance Was Created To Interact With Mortals

The Upside Down Man has a very off-putting appearance. He appears as a humanoid creature with no eyes, a mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth, and a body that appears to be covered in spider eggs. Despite this creepy appearance, it not his real form. He mentions during his first encounter with the Justice League Dark that this appearance was created by himself to interact with mortals better.

His real form has not yet been revealed but given that it scared the goddess Hecate herself, its probably for the best. The only thing known far about his true appearance is that given the form he commonly appears in, its likely spider-like.

5 He Saved The World Twice

Despite the Upside Down Man being portrayed as a villain, he has saved Earth on two different occasions. The first time was during the Witching Hour crossover, when Hecate sought to destroy mankind for abusing the magic she granted to them. To defeat Hecate, Wonder Woman allowed the Upside-Down Man to have his revenge on Hecate.

The other time was when he freed Wonder Woman from Hecate’s home dimension, the Collective Unconscious, so that she could defeat Circe before she could become Hecate’s replacement. Not bad for one of the most monstrous villains in all of DC Comics’ history.

4 He Can Turn Magic Against Its User

As Upside Down Man’s essence is connected to the whole of magic itself, this grants him a powerful ability to use against the magical inclined. That ability being that the Upside Down Man can cause magic to backfired against somebody trying to use it. this backfired varies from causing a spell to act in an unintended manner to destroying a person imbued with magic.

Upside Down Man would make his presence first known by causing Zatanna to summon a monstrosity out of her hat instead of a rabbit. He also caused Jason Blood to temporarily lose his power to turn into the Demon by causing the Demon’s blood to reject Jason Blood’s body.

3 The Otherkind Are His Children

The Otherkind are monstrous creatures from the Dark Multiverse that serves as the Upside Down Man’s servants. While their origins are not completely clear, it has been established that their powers are linked to the Upside Down Man. Given that bit of information and the actions of his polar opposite Hecate, the origins of the Otherkind can be surmised.

That origin being that the Otherkind are the spawns of the Upside Down Man. The Otherkind is the creation of the Upside Down Man to serve as his equivariant to God’s created by Hecate’s magic.

2 The More People Believe In His Kind, The More Powerful He Becomes

As every Human has at least a little of Hecate’s essence within them, they have the power to empower any being that Mankind believes is real. So for an other-dimensional being wanting to gain power over Earth would need to have a good part of mankind to believe in them. In the Upside Down Man’s case, he sought to make mankind believe in the Otherkind to both make him more powerful and to allow him to stay longer on Earth.

He built up belief in the Otherkind by controlling various humans to recount their encounters with the Otherkind. Most noticeably he convinced Man-Bat to write stories about his encounter with the Otherkind to build up a belief about the Otherkind among Earth’s population.

1 Eclipso Was Created As His Replacement

The Upside Down Man, while being a villainous entity, was meant to serve as a balance to Hecate’s power. However, due to his imprisonment in the Dark Multiverse, Hecate was left unopposed. The Gods fearing Hecate’s power search for a way to limit it. Their solution was to create a replacement for the Upside Down Man.

This replacement would later become the powerful demon Eclipso that had fought Earth’s heroes on numerous occasions. This newly reveal aspect of Eclipso’s origin would become a plot-point in the “Witching War” story as Circe sought to use the diamond that Ecilspso is imprisoned in to access Hecate’s realm.
