SpongeBob Sponge on the Run Gives Bikini Bottom the Ultimate Role in Underwater Life

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which premieres on Paramount+ and VOD on March 4.

At the heart of SpongeBob SquarePants has always been the titular character’s open heart and love for his friends and family, especially his pet snail, Gary. By the end of Sponge on the Run, he’s even found a way to spread that joy to everyone he knows, with every citizen in Bikini Bottom getting their own snail.

Bikini Bottom has been the chief setting for the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise since the show began. The small town is home to SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and all their loved ones. Although the town’s general morality can shift depending on the events of the episode or storyline in question, it’s usually portrayed as a simple, pleasant place to live.

It’s also not the primary setting for Sponge on the Run, which takes SpongeBob and Patrick on a journey to the Lost City of Atlantic City to try and rescue Gary from the clutches of Poseidon, who has been using sea snail mucus as part of his skincare regimen. This has resulted in almost all of the sea snails in the ocean being depleted of their natural secretions. After they’re expunged of all use to Poseidon, the snails are put to work in his castle, forced into manual labor to provide more power through his city, leading him to put out a call for the only one remaining — Gary.

Upon having a change of heart thanks to SpongeBob and his friends, Poseidon decides to release the captured heroes, as well as all the snails. SpongeBob is quickly convinced by Gary to bring the other snails back to Bikini Bottom, which ends up becoming a snail sanctuary. The end of the film reveals that almost everyone across the town has taken to adopting a snail as a pet, forging their own relationships similar to the one that SpongeBob and Gary share.

The ending actually feels like a sweet coda to the franchise as a whole and its commitment towards inclusivity and friendship. It also gives everyone in Bikini Bottom a new pet to bond with, bringing them all closer together as a town. Even Plankton, one of the show’s most consistent villains, is shown with a new pet. It’s a sweet development for the town and the citizens, and it could have honestly been a strong final moment for the series. Luckily, the franchise will continue to cause laughs in multiple forms, but Sponge on the Run is a sweet beat for a film all about friendship.

Directed and written by Tim Hill from a story by Tim Hill, Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run features the voice talent of Tom Kenny, Awkwafina, Matt Berry, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence, Mr. Lawrence and Reggie Watts. The film arrives Thursday, March 4 on Paramount+.
