Where Army of Thieves Characters Are During Army of the Dead

Zack Snyder explains where the characters from Army of Thieves are during Army of the Dead. Following Snyder’s tenure with the DCEU, the filmmaker signed a deal with Netflix to develop projects for the streaming service, the first of which was Army of the Dead. The zombie-heist film debuted this past May and went on to crack the top 10 most-watched titles on Netflix with over 75 million views. With Dave Bautista as its lead, Army of the Dead follows a group of mercenaries who venture into an undead-infested Las Vegas to attempt a fatal heist.

After it was clear the film would be a hit, Snyder began developing two prequels for Netflix, one an animated series and other a live-action feature titled Army of Thieves. The prequel film is centered around Matthias Schweighöfer’s eccentric safecracker from Army of the Dead and is set six years before the events of the previous film. Directed by Schweighöfer, Army of Thieves finds Ludwig Dieter hired by a mysterious woman (Nathalie Emmanuel) to attempt a heist with a misfit crew of aspiring thieves, some of them played by Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, and Guz Khan.

Now, during an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Snyder talked at length about Army of Thieves and his plans for the future of the so-called Armyverse. When asked about the possibility of the characters introduced in Thieves returning for future installments, Snyder revealed that they are probably “in some prison somewhere,” though he didn’t rule out the chances of them returning. You know what, you never know. I mean, we have a plan right now for a sequel to Army of the Dead. And as you know, none of these guys… Really, they’re all, I guess, in some prison somewhere.

Now that Army of Thieves is now streaming on Netflix, the next installment in Snyder’s zombie franchise will be the animated series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which will further explore the backstories for the characters from Army of the Dead. However, there are currently no plans to revisit any of the characters from Thieves. Them being in prison prevented them from participating in Army of the Dead’s heist, which might have been a blessing in disguise considering how few made it out alive.

Schweighöfer’s Dieter was sadly one of the characters who seemingly perished during the Army of the Dead, though Snyder hasn’t ruled out the possibility of him returning either in the sequel which he recently revealed is titled Planet of the Dead. If Dieter indeed survived his encounter with Zeus and the subsequent nuclear explosion, he could theoretically reunite with his old heist crew in later installments. For now, viewers can catch up with Dieter during his early days of safecracking in Army of Thieves.
