Why A Discovery of Witches Changed the Books Most Painful Storyline

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches’ Season 3 premiere, now streaming on Shudder.

The third and final season of A Discovery of Witches opens with Diana and Matthew finally returning to present-day Oxford. However, this also means that Diana now has to face the tragic events that ended Season 2’s cliffhanger of a finale. When Diana returns to Sept-Tours, she learns that Emily has been murdered by Knox. Seeing as Emily was a mother figure to Diana, she’s overcome with rage and grief. However, it doesn’t take long for Matthew to surprise Diana with some unexpected and joyful news. In Season 3, Episode 1 of A Discovery of Witches, the audience learns that not only is Diana pregnant, but she’s pregnant with twins.

In the bestselling book series written by Deborah Harkness, Diana miscarries her first child during her first trimester. Although that doesn’t happen in Season 2, the pregnancy wasn’t too far along by the season’s end, which left open the possibility for this storyline to be visited in Season 3. However, this choice was ultimately vetoed by the show writers, despite Diana actor Teresa Palmer’s fight for wanting to include it in the series run.

When the writers decided not to include this storyline in Season 2, Palmer spoke out about this choice to EW, sharing, “I really fought for the miscarriage to be included in the series. As a woman who’s had a miscarriage herself, I thought it was really pertinent to the story and the journey of Matthew and Diana. And also just to show the fragility of life and new life and bringing babies into this world. For the writers and [executive producer] Jane Tranter, I think they really felt as though we couldn’t dedicate enough time to mourning and having the true grieving process that you need to have as a woman who goes through something like that and then quickly move back into all the other things we have to navigate through this series and through this season.”

Based on how Season 3 opens — its breakneck pace to find a cure for bloodlust, Diana’s quickly blossoming pregnancy that makes it seem like creatures gestate three times as fast as humans, and Emily’s death — there’s not enough room to explore this painful part of Diana’s story. Although this choice will likely upset some fans, and rightfully so, Season 3 does seem determined to show how motherhood is a powerful force.

When speaking with CBR ahead of Season 3’s release, Palmer teased how motherhood will change Diana in Season 3. “Diana is a mother. That just opens up a whole other side of Diana and Matthew and their relationship… So many people who have had children will understand just being in the trenches with your partner when you have a newborn. But then it’s so heightened — Diana and Matthew — because they’re also still trying to pursue Ashmole 782 and dealing with all the chaos and the danger that they are facing… She has to oscillate between being a mother and just trying to learn how to do things like breastfeed her baby and comfort her baby, but then also being the world’s most powerful witch and defending those who she loves.”

Watch Diana’s rise to power and a new family form in A Discovery of Witches’ third and final season, with new episodes available each Saturday on Shudder and AMC+.
