Why Big Mouths Lola Is So Popular On TikTok

Lola from Big Mouth, as voiced by Nick Kroll, has become a hugely popular lip sync on TikTok. Lola was introduced in the first season as Devin’s obnoxious and unpleasant friend. She is often angry and socially inept, and is the only female character to be voiced by a man, amplifying her aggressive nature.

When Big Mouth premiered on Netflix in 2017, adults and teens alike were delighted by the raunchy yet educational humor that was frank and honest about puberty and sexuality. Big Mouth has the typical cast of characters that tend to appear in junior high: enthusiastic nerds, emotionally troubled kids whose parents are divorcing, the gross kid, kids whose imagination get the better of them, and kids experiencing all varieties of mishaps having to do with changes in their bodies. Lola represents the odd, unpopular girl that no one actually likes — not because she’s different, but because she’s way too much and way too mean, which is also way too fun for imitators.

The character’s loud, brassy voice and penchant to over-annunciate words makes for an ideal way to express some funny sentiments. She mimics the way many millennials mock the Valley Girl accent, pronouncing “hell” as “hull” and “sold” as “syold.” She punches her “b” and “d” sounds and always adds an “uh” after “m,” making the word “same,” “sayuhmuh.” Her inability to process social niceties along with her ridiculous speech pattern makes her perfect fodder for a platform like TikTok, where lip syncing is all the rage. Some of the quotes include, “Oh my god Andrew, that was like stupid romantic. Now hold my book bag; I need to go piss. I had two ‘Borks’ root beer at lunch. And meet me outside, you’re walking me home!” and “Andrew, why won’t you pants me? I’m wearing one of my mom’s thongs and I put tanning cream all over my butt cheeks” (which she comically whines and over-enunciates). These quotable lines pepper the platform, and it’s clear to see why.

Kroll is a gifted and versatile voiceover artist, whose colorful radio shock DJ “The Douche” was a favorite on Parks and Recreation largely due to his vocal versatility. His expressive voice is matched by his silly personality, which is playful and imaginative, feeding into his knack for nailing certain kinds of people audiences have all met at least once in their life. The recognizable elements of his performance as Lola is what keeps people coming back to her for built-in comedy material. Lola is abrasive and ornery and outrageous, and her delivery inspires spit-takes and belly laughs, whether or not TikTok users have seen Big Mouth. So beloved is Kroll’s portrayal of Lola that he has even inspired impressions from users like @patrickpohs, whose mimicry of Kroll is pretty spot-on.

It seems apparent that TikTok users get Lola. She is as familiar as she is excessive, and people on social media understand that kind of personality. There is abundant appeal in someone so bizarre and yet so commonplace, the almost clown-like and endlessly quotable depiction of someone nearly all viewers of Big Mouth recognize from real life.
