Why Cobra Kai Needs Another AllValley Tournament In Season 3

Cobra Kai season 3 should bring back the All-Valley Karate Tournament, and it could tie into multiple plot threads left over from season 2. The tournament between several local karate dojos has been a key feature of The Karate Kid franchise since the original 1984 movie when Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) faced off against Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and defeated him with his now-famous crane kick.

Held in Los Angeles, the All-Valley Karate Tournament is an annual event, but it’s only been depicted three times in the world of The Karate Kid. It was the focus of the first movie, as Daniel’s primary goal in the movie was to advance to the finals and beat Johnny. The following year’s All-Valley Tournament took place in The Karate Kid Part III, which saw Daniel defend his title from Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), who had been trained by Cobra Kai founder Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). Decades later, Cobra Kai revisited it in season 1 by having Johnny register his new class of students for the tournament. The final match, which was between Robby (Tanner Buchanan) and Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), ended with a victory for Cobra Kai.

Cobra Kai skipped over the tournament in season 2, but a fourth one could be held in season 3. Another All-Valley Karate Tournament would be good move for the Netflix series for a number of reasons. First of all, it’ll be fundamentally different from the one that occurred in season 1, and a lot of that has to do with how much has changed since Miguel defeated Robby. Several new fighters have entered the picture at this point, including Tory (Peyton List) and Stingray (Paul Walter Hauser). Plus, Demetri (Gianni Decenzo) and Sam (Mary Mouser) are now practicing karate and could compete as well. Having such a large number of familiar faces all being participants could make the tournament much more fun to watch.

Also, there’s the matter of Miyago-do, which didn’t get started until season 2. Robby had been trained by Daniel, but he was acting independently in Cobra Kai season 1’s tournament. The next tournament, however, could allow Miyagi-do to be represented properly. If Johnny gets Cobra Kai back or starts a third karate school, the tournament could serve as an excellent opportunity to test how far the main characters have come in their training. Season 2 already did this to a certain extent with the high school brawl, but they’ll have likely improved even more by the time the tournament begins.

As for Johnny, he already won the tournament in Cobra Kai through Miguel, so there’s some question over what the narrative purpose would be of his dojo taking part in another one. It’s important to keep in mind that his last win wasn’t a glorious or a clean victory by any means. Since dirty fighting was a factor, it wasn’t a win that Johnny was proud of, and that really ruined the moment for him. Ever since, Johnny has tried to change what Cobra Kai stands for. Season 3 can reveal if Johnny’s students can win the All-Valley Karate Tournament in an honorable fashion.
