Why Community’s Joel McHale Needed A Lot Of Bravery For Season 1 Nude Scene

Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger on the cult sitcom Community for all six seasons, says getting naked in season 1, episode 17, “Physical Education” required a lot of bravery. Community, which was created by Dan Harmon, who is now the showrunner on another cult favorite, Rick and Morty, ran for five seasons on NBC before being cancelled, but was resurrected by Yahoo! Screen, for its sixth and final season.

The show followed a diverse and eccentric group of students at Greendale Community College. It featured McHale in the lead role of disgraced lawyer Winger, a star-making turn for Donald Glover as jock-turned-nerd Troy Barnes, Gillian Jacobs as pseudo-activist Britta Perry, Alison Brie as the neurotic Annie Edison, Yvette Nicole-Brown as the matronly Shirley Bennett, Danny Pudi as supernerd Abed Nadir and Chevy Chase as racist and sexist millionaire Pierce Hawthorne. While the show never hit the kind of numbers that more popular shows of the time, like The Office, got, it remained popular throughout its run and has seen a resurgence in popularity since it was added to Netflix’s catalog in April of this year.

In a recent interview with EW, McHale reveals that having to get naked in season 1 of the show “required a lot of bravery on my part” to pull off. In episode 17, McHale’s character gets into a fight with the physical education teacher over the prescribed uniform for the class, and ends up playing a round of pool against him in the nude. McHale says it was his first nude scene and, while he isn’t seen completely nude on-screen, he was close to nude on set. He was required to wear a “dance belt,” which in movies and TV is a thong that actors wear to make it appear as though they are nude. McHale, however, says the belt only covers the bare essentials and when he lifted his leg on to the pool table, pretty much everyone could see “right up my ass.” He says it was particularly difficult as he’s not that proud of his butt.

McHale goes on to joke that after the recent Community table read that took place via Zoom, the cast reunited for the long-awaited Community movie. He quips that it was shot as a two-hour-long Zoom call with a budget of $230 million, most of which went to Glover.

McHale’s interview proves that he isn’t as confident as his on-screen alter ego Winger, who is notoriously arrogant about his looks. While McHale is clearly in great shape, he’s obviously got some insecurities around his rear end, but thankfully didn’t have to show it on-screen. What his cast mates thought of it all, though, has yet to be revealed.

While McHale jokes about the Community movie, there is still a great deal of support for the idea, and with the renewed popularity of the show, it means it is once again a possibility. Many of the stars, as well as the Russo Brothers, who directed key episodes of Community, have said they’d return for a movie, but no confirmation has emerged as yet.
