Why Cyberpunk 2077s Tutorial Shouldve Been LifepathCentric

When Cyberpunk 2077’s Lifepath trailer first came out, it looked like the Lifepath players chose would have a huge impact on gameplay, with the idea of different starting points for each adding to the game’s hype. Unfortunately, players were likely left disappointed when the uniqueness each Lifepath seemingly ended within roughly 20 minutes of Cyberpunk 2077’s opening moments. A player’s chosen Lifepath proved to not have as big an impact on gameplay as marketed, with the Cyberpunk 2077’s Lifepath convergence point happening very early on the game. CDPR missed a golden opportunity to give each path depth and life with a unique, story-driven tutorial.

Cyberpunk 2077’s current tutorial takes place after the player’s Lifepath intro and involves Jackie simply giving V a training datashard before the two go out to complete a job for Wakado Okada. Players can choose to skip the tutorial with no consequences, but those who do choose to brush up on their skills will be taken to a virtual training ground and taught the basics. Players are only required to do three of the five training simulations. Upon finishing the tutorial, V and Jackie will move forward and complete the job they were tasked with.

Other than the three initial starting points and at least one job specific to each Lifepath, the only major gameplay changes that Cyberpunk 2077’s Lifepath choices affect are dialogue options; each Lifepath occasionally gets specific dialogue responses that can provide context to a conversation or give the player an edge in advancing the discussion, just like the skill-based dialogue options. Even V’s Lifepath-specific database info doesn’t provide any useful information t0 help players invest in their Lifepath choice. With unique tutorials centered around each Lifepath, CDPR could’ve provided useful background information about V’s life before Johnny and make each Lifepath matter more.

How Cyberpunk 2077 Could Make Lifepaths Better: Nomad Tutorial

Why Cyberpunk 2077s Tutorial Shouldve Been LifepathCentric

In Cyberpunk 2077’s Nomad Lifepath, V is first seen removing a patch with the word “Bakkers” from their jacket – the name of the nomad clan V left due to the family supposedly falling apart. Later, when V gets into contact with Willie McCoy, V reveals they left the Bakkers because they refused to join Snake Nation. This small interaction is one of the only times the players get any kind of information about Nomad V. There is also a job to get V’s Nomad vehicle back, and players can learn a little more about Nomad V’s history when talking to Takemura before a specific Cyberpunk 2o77 quest, but overall, not much else is shown.

Imagine a Nomad-centric tutorial, where players could begin the game at the Bakkers camp in The Badlands. In a flashback, perhaps, V could remember their time with the Bakkers, letting players go through the tutorial with Willie McCoy and other members of the clan, depending on the skill that’s being worked on. For example, the player could do the melee tutorial with one member of the Bakkers and the stealth tutorial with another. Not only would this allow players to learn Cyberpunk 2077’s basic skills, but it would also give players an idea of who Nomad V was prior to the beginning of the game. Once players complete the tutorial, the original starting point would begin, with V leaving their clan and heading to Night City.

How Cyberpunk 2077 Could Make Lifepaths Better: Street Kid Tutorial

Why Cyberpunk 2077s Tutorial Shouldve Been LifepathCentric

The Street Kid starting point involves V helping a bartender named Pepe pay off his debt by stealing a car. Along the way, V meets up with Padre of the Valentinos gang, at which point it’s revealed V just returned to Night City from Atlanta. After a brief altercation with a 6th Street gang member, Padre gives V his card and drops V off. It’s not known why V left Night City for Atlanta or if they were a part of any of Cyberpunk 2077’s gangs before leaving.

A Street Kid Lifepath-centric tutorial could allow players to pick a Night City gang for V, completing the tutorial with that specific gang in a flashback. Once the tutorial is completed, the original starting point would begin, with V returning to Night City after leaving the gang for some time. This would create some interesting scenarios for players; perhaps the gang players chose to do the tutorial with would hate V for leaving them, and Night City would be hostile towards the player at every opportunity. Players could also try to get back on the gang’s good side by completing jobs for them.

How Cyberpunk 2077 Could Make Lifepaths Better: Corpo Tutorial

The Corporate Lifepath starting point begins with V vomiting in the restroom, dealing the stress of life as an employee of Cyberpunk 2077’s Arasaka corporation. They are called into the office of their boss, Arthur Jenkins, and tasked with killing his boss, Susan Abernathy. V reluctantly agrees and goes to meet longtime friend Jackie to talk about completing the job. However, before the two can do anything, V is apprehended by Susan’s agents and relieved of duty as an Arasaka employee, leaving V with nothing but a chance to start over.

A Corpo-centric Cyberpunk tutorial could focus on V’s time as an Arasaka counterintelligence agent. The tutorial could begin with V on their first day as an Arasaka employee, where the player could be introduced to Arthur and guided through the tutorial with him while learning about what V will do as an agent. Not only would this give players the chance to see the relationship between V and Arthur, but it could also provide important information about Arasaka.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a vast world with a variety of interesting characters. While V can be an interesting character based on choices made by the player, certain development choices – like Lifepath-specific tutorials – could’ve added to the character’s uniqueness. Unfortunately, a rushed released hindered what could’ve made Cyberpunk’s V like The Witcher’s Geralt: an iconic CD Projekt Red protagonist.
