Why Demon Slayer’s Zenitsu Falls Asleep (And What Happens When He Does)

Zenitsu Agatsuma no doubt strikes many Demon Slayer viewers as a gutless coward, passing out right as he squares up against every major demon he encounters – but it’s a very different scenario when he is asleep. Zenitsu himself acknowledges that he’s terrified of demons and considers himself a weakling. As he starts his journey as a demon slayer, it becomes clear that he doesn’t just pass out and become a liability on his missions with Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Nezuko. He also holds up his own.

Like other demon slayer hopefuls, Zenitsu went through a deadly Final Selection at Mt. Fujikasane where he had to face numerous demons and live. He was one of the only four who survived that particular selection; the other three were Tanjiro, Kanao, and Genya. This was already a great achievement. Even if he does think that he’s always on the verge of dying — either from fear or from being devoured by a demon — passing the Final Selection is telling of Zenitsu’s potential, as well as an early sign that there is more to him when it comes to fighting prowess.

Zenitsu may be faint-hearted and tend to pass out when he gets too afraid – thus placing him into a bizarre kind of sleep – but he actually has stellar Nichirin Blade skills and breathing techniques. Fortunately for him, being unconscious is the key to activating his combat skills. In Demon Slayer season 1, episode 12, “The Boar Bares Its Fangs, Zenitsu Sleeps,” it was revealed just how potent Zenitsu’s powers are when he’s asleep. Knocked out after being extremely frightened by the demon in the same room, he stands and uses the Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash, effectively killing the demon. But when he came to, he was oblivious about what happened.

When he’s awake and aware of his surroundings, Zenitsu can be useless; he panics so much that he’s often begging Tanjiro to protect him. When asleep, however, Zenitsu is able to let go of his paralyzing fear and anxiety and let his prowess shine through. In this way, Zenitsu is similar to Rock Lee from the manga and anime series Naruto, since they both need to transport themselves into a different headspace to tap into some of their greater powers. Where Rock Lee needs alcohol to activate his Drunken Fist, Zenitsu needs to doze off to execute his flawless sword and breathing technique.

Zenitsu’s skills are unique in itself, but the way he needs to sleep to activate them is even more peculiar. It proved to be extremely useful in Demon Slayer: Mugen Train where the demon slayers were put to sleep by a demon. This gave Zenitsu an advantage as he continued to battle the demon even if he was under the blood demon art.

What may be an idiosyncratic trait turned out to be an asset to Zenitsu and his friends, and there will doubtless be more instances where he can use his skills in Demon Slayer season 2. Away from his fears and anxieties, a sleeping Zenitsu can unleash his mighty thunder breathing skills which allow him to move at lightning speed with his Nichirin Blade. His incredible abilities lay dormant underneath his flighty exterior, and sleeping lets him showcase them.
