Why Doom Fans Have Turned Around On Dwayne Johnson’s Movie

At long last, Doom fans are coming around on the 2005 film. The Dwayne Johnson-led project has been panned for over a decade. Critics and video game fans alike detested the adaptation, panning virtually every part of the action and story. For some time it was out of public consciousness; however, the release of Doom Eternal has brought many people back to it. The consensus has now gone from negative to somewhat positive, with video game fans giving it another shot with a new perspective.

It’s no secret how poorly received Doom was. It currently sits at a rotten 19% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with only a slightly better 34% from audiences. The film is notorious for its butchering of the source material and poor presentation. It either tried too hard, as the disastrous “first-person shooter” section did, or it drifted too far from what was expected of it. The characters even had names and personalities, which wasn’t what the games were about. Doom was supposed to be about the iconic monsters and weaponry, which were a rare sight in the film. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson couldn’t save it alone. Time and nostalgia had to tag in over a decade later.

15 years after its release, Doom has been given new life by fans. Newcomers to the film enjoy its campiness, which has become more well-received in recent years. It is goofy, for lack of a better term; from the corny dialogue to the mid-2000s aesthetic of it all. Not taking the Doom video games into account, it is a passable sci-fi distraction. Die-hard fans have yet to accept it as a true adaptation because it still isn’t. The casual movie watcher has given it credit for the entertaining mess that it is. Perhaps someday 2019’s Doom: Annihilation will have a similar resurgence. Certain outside circumstances also paved the way for the movie to improve its status.

One of the biggest driving factors behind Doom’s resurrection is nostalgia. It’s fair to say it’s the one thing that influences much of popular culture in the modern-day. It’s easier to enjoy something if there’s a positive moment to associate with it. 15 years is a long time to remain out of the limelight. That time has allowed fans to come back to the Doom movie with open arms. And because of that, it’s been given a warmer reception than it originally had. Also worth noting is how The Rock’s Hollywood career has exploded since then. People have always loved him, but his films post-Doom have likely made his performance easier to digest.

Doom is an acquired taste. As one of the few things the movie and video games have in common, it’s not for everyone. At least the games have been beloved since the beginning; the film “adaptation” cannot say the same. It has been hated on for years and is only now being recognized as an enjoyable watch. It’s still a mess of a movie in more ways than one, and unfortunately, video game movies are historically tough to get right. Still, that shouldn’t take away from one’s enjoyment. Time, and Dwyane Johnson, have begun to heal the wounds that were Doom’s initial fan reaction.
