Why Eric Dane Left Greys Anatomy

ABC’s long-running medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy has gone through plenty of characters in the almost 20 years since the show has been on the air. Some of those departures have involved a certain degree of controversy, like when Justin Chambers left the series and his character Dr. Alex Karev abruptly walked away from his job and his marriage. Though some fans were happy that Alex reunited with his ex-wife Izzie Stevens (played by Katherine Heigl), others weren’t thrilled about what his exit did to Jo.

Another controversial departure happened in Season 8, when Grey’s had its infamous plane crash. That episode still stands as one of the show’s biggest and most dramatic. It also resulted in the deaths of two characters — including Dr. Mark Sloan, the doctor dubbed “McSteamy” who was played by Eric Dane. Why was Mark killed off in the aviation disaster?

Who Was Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy?

Why Eric Dane Left Greys Anatomy

Dr. Mark Sloan first appeared as a guest star in the Season 2 episode “Yesterday,” before being promoted to a series regular in the Season 3 episode “Sometimes a Fantasy.” Mark and Derek Shepherd were childhood friends — although they weren’t on the best of terms, considering Mark slept with Derek’s wife Addison (who recently returned to the series). That was only the beginning of Mark’s problems with women. To say Mark was a flirt is an understatement, since he constantly committed acts of infidelity. Mark’s infamous behavior around women and his manipulative charm earned him the nickname “McSteamy,” a play on Derek’s notorious nickname “McDreamy.”

While Mark had a daughter named Sofia with Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez), fans remember him with his serious love interest, Lexie Grey. Lexie passed away in the plane crash, which left Mark heartbroken — and he eventually succumbed to his injuries sustained from the accident during the Season 9 episode “Remember the Time.” The hospital was renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in their honor, so a part of both characters is still around, even if they aren’t… at least physically.

Why Eric Dane Left Grey’s Anatomy

Mark’s exit from Grey’s Anatomy shook viewers, but it was the actor’s choice to walk away from the role. According to a 2013 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dane left the show because he was “interested in something different.” That something different was an opportunity to lead the cast of TNT’s drama series The Last Ship. He played main character Tom Chandler for the show’s entire five-season run and can now be seen as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria.

Yet just because Mark was dead didn’t stop Dane from coming back to Grey’s Anatomy several years later. Mark returned for the Season 17 episode “Breathe” as a special guest star alongside Leigh. Mark and Lexie were two of the characters who appeared to Meredith Grey on a beach when Meredith had her life-threatening struggle with COVID-19. So while Eric Dane’s character may have tragically been killed off of Grey’s Anatomy, Mark Sloan has continued to be part of the show in different ways ever since.
