Why Eternals Rotten Tomatoes Score is So Bad and How Low Will it Go

The first batch of reviews for Eternals was fairly positive, giving the movie a 75% debut Rotten Tomatoes, but since then, it’s gradually fallen all the way to 53%, making it the MCU’s first “Rotten” film on the Tomatometer. Initially, the Eternals Rotten Tomatoes score briefly dipped to 59% rotten before quickly returning to 60% where it lingered for a few more days, but now that the score is officially Rotten territory, the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the MCU, it isn’t likely to jump back up again.

Up to this point, The Marvel Cinematic Universe had a perfect track record in Rotten Tomatoes, averaging 85% and earning the extra special “Certified Fresh” status on 23 of the 25 pre-Eternals movies. Six out of the last 10 MCU movies scored over 90%, two of the last 10 scored over 85%, and the last two were both 79%, so the level of consistently high scores is something the franchise is known for, and it’s what makes Eternals stand out.

MCU movies tend to open high and then drop at least a few points by the time they hit theaters, since the initial reviews are from reviewers who are more passionate about the franchise, and potentially attended the premiere, which naturally tends to be a much more positive experience than everyone else’s theatergoing experience, and the same is true of Eternals; however, unlike most other MCU movies, it didn’t open in the 80s or 90s on the Tomatometer. Eternals opened at 75%, then dropped quite a bit more than most other MCU movies. Despite the severe Tomatometer drop, the numbers proportionally match most other MCU movies. The difference between the average review score and the Tomatometer is in-line with the rest of the MCU, meaning there doesn’t seem to be any odd behavior with reviews causing the Rotten Tomatoes score to misrepresent the actual critical sentiment, which can frequently happen with Rotten Tomatoes.

Eternals currently has 165 reviews and stands at 53%. Of the 100 most recently submitted reviews, 41% are fresh; 40% of the last 60 reviews are fresh; and 25% of the last 20 reviews are fresh. This trend will likely continue, meaning the score will continue to drop. Marvel movies get an average of 379 reviews in Rotten Tomatoes, leaving approximately 214 additional reviews pending submission. So, if reviews continue to follow this trend (of 25%-41% Fresh reviews), and the review count hits the MCU average 379 total reviews submitted to Rotten Tomatoes, Eternals would get another 54-88 Fresh reviews for a total of 142-176, another 126-161 Rotten reviews for a total of 203-238, and the final Eternals Rotten Tomatoes score would be approximately 38%-47%. A score in that range would be 19-28 points lower than the MCU’s previous Rotten Tomatoes low point, Thor: The Dark World, at 66%, and 38-47 points lower than the MCU’s 85% average. If it doesn’t hit the MCU’s average total review count, such as Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with 312 total reviews, the score would end up at approximately 40%-48%, but if it gets more than the MCU average, such as Black Widow’s 434 reviews, the score would end up 36%-46%.

Of course, reviews are inherently subjective. The Rotten Tomatoes score is merely a summary of what percentage of submitted reviews were positive or negative. Marvel movies almost always have higher audience scores than critical scores as well, so it’ll be interesting to see how the movie is received by fans and general audience members once it finally arrives in theaters.
