The new Chromecast with Google TV is a good quality device but it doesn’t quite measure up to Amazon’s 4K HDMI streaming stick in one key area.

Google’s recently launched Chromecast with Google TV is an impressive device. When it comes to overall functionality, though, it stumbles slightly in the face of Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K. While the Fire TV Stick is a couple of years older and not quite as powerful as the newer Chromecast, it is still the better device. And that’s because it has the edge against Google in one critical area: versatility.
Amazon released the Fire TV Stick 4K back in 2018 and it remains the company’s only UHD streaming solution in that form factor. It has a 1.7 GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of storage, and 1.5GB of RAM. It can stream 4K video at up to 60 fps and has support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+. But, on paper, the Chromecast with Google TV, which was unveiled in September, looks like the better device. It has the same video capabilities and storage but also uses 2 GB of RAM and its quad-core CPU has a clock speed of up to 1.9 GHz. Plus, they both cost $49.99 so, at first glance, choosing between them seems like a no-brainer.
In practice, however, it’s not so simple. Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K is arguably still the best HDMI streaming stick and that’s because users can do more with it than with its competitors. The Amazon Fire TV App Store offers more than 9,000 apps and, since its operating system Fire OS is a proprietary fork of the open-source Android, other apps can be sideloaded onto the streaming stick. Granted, they may not always work properly, but the option is there. The most important app, though, comes preinstalled with Fire OS — and that’s the Amazon Silk web browser. This one simple app allows the user to treat the Fire TV Stick 4K like a PC and surf the entirety of the web. In contrast, Chromecast with Google TV runs on Android TV, which doesn’t have much in the way of browser options. Like with Fire OS, third-party Android apps can be sideloaded onto the Chromecast with Google TV, but downloading is cumbersome as users have no built-in browser to navigate to the files.
What Makes Amazon Silk Great
Not everyone may like Amazon Silk, and those people can choose to download Firefox from the app store instead, but Amazon’s built-in browser loads pages fast and is a great way to surf the web on a TV, especially when the user only has a remote for navigation. Sure, most people probably won’t be using the browser to, say, check their emails or do their banking, but Silk also opens up avenues to video content that’s not accessible on other devices. For example, in these COVID times, many film festivals have gone virtual so that movie lovers can watch titles from the safety of their living rooms. But only a few of these festivals make apps for streaming devices, meaning film lovers can be forced to watch this content on their laptops. With Amazon Silk, though, users can simply load the festival’s viewing page right on the TV. Silk also has a default setting that when a site tries to open a new window, a warning dialog box pops up instead, giving the user a chance to cancel the command. It may seem small but it’s useful. Pop-up windows can be a nightmare to deal with when there’s no mouse or keyboard.
It should be noted that there are some browser options for Android TV, like Puffin Browser, and Chrome can be sideloaded onto Chromecast with Google TV to offer a similar experience. Alternatively, users could mirror the mobile device’s screen with the browser on it to the TV. But these are not great solutions and the end result may not be desirable. Still, it isn’t a bad device. As mentioned above, Chromecast with Google TV is the more powerful of the two with both a faster processor and more RAM than the Fire TV Stick 4K. This difference in performance may be negligible most of the time, as these operating systems generally don’t run multiple apps at once, but in certain situations, Chromecast with Google TV may come out on top.
