Why Frozen 2 Beat The First Movie At The Box Office (Despite Being Worse)

When Frozen 2 premiered in 2019, it debuted to a box office of $130.3 million and shattered Frozen’s opening weekend – even though Frozen 2 was a worse move. Frozen 2 picks up three years after the events of Frozen, and follows royal sisters Anna and Elsa as they follow a mysterious voice north to the Enchanted Forest, and try to discover the origin of Elsa’s powers. Along the way, Anna and Elsa discover that Arendelle’s history isn’t as idyllic as they thought, and try to free the forest from the enchanted mist that’s trapping it.

Frozen 2 was widely criticized for introducing too much lore and not properly explaining it. Although Frozen 2 is a beautifully made film, the mythology – which included introducing the magical glacier Ahtohallan, the Northuldra people, and the four elemental spirits of the Enchanted Forest – doesn’t make a lot of sense, and leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Director Jennifer Lee admitted in the docu-series Into The Unknown: Making Frozen 2 that they didn’t even know who the mysterious voice until very late into the production. The thin plot didn’t hold up to scrutiny, and even the songs didn’t live up to the ubiquitous “Let It Go.” Despite this, Frozen 2 went on to make $1.450 billion worldwide, compared to the $1.280 billion of the first movie. So why did Frozen 2 beat Frozen at the box office?

Frozen 2’s Ending & The Fifth Spirit Explained

Frozen’s box office can be partly blamed on Disney’s strange distribution model. Frozen was only given a limited release the weekend before Thanksgiving before going nationwide a week later. It was a strange decision from Disney, since limited releases are typically reserved for smaller movies that need word-of-mouth, and a Disney animated movie is typically something that will perform at the box office. Frozen 2 didn’t repeat Frozen’s release mistake, and opened nationwide for its first weekend – all but guaranteeing that the movie was going to beat its predecessor at the box office.

That’s not the only reason that Frozen 2 did better than Frozen. Frozen 2 benefitted from being a long awaited sequel to one of Disney’s biggest hits, and had years of hype leading up to its release. Frozen was likely to do reasonably well, but it wasn’t part of an established franchise and there was no guarantee of it becoming the runaway phenomenon it did – the limited release is partly due to Disney being unsure that the film would be such a success. The six-year gap between Frozen and its long-awaited sequel meant that Frozen 2 was one of the most anticipated films of 2019 when it finally premiered, and that it did so as part of one of the most successful animated franchises of all time.

Disney didn’t predict Frozen’s runaway success, but it laid the groundwork for Frozen 2 to become a blockbuster. Frozen 2 had much greater hype and and massive expectations than Frozen did when it was released. The film’s hype, combined with the immediate nationwide release in theaters, is what made Frozen 2 beat Frozen at the box office. But, while it might have done better at the box office, Frozen 2 was plagued with narrative issues and mediocre songs that never lived up to Frozen. Despite that, Frozen 2 had the all-time highest grossing opening weekend for an animated film, and went on to become the third-highest grossing film of 2019. Even though it was a worse movie, the sequel managed to capitalize on the success of Frozen – and that’s what let Frozen 2 soar to record-breaking heights.
