Why How I Met Your Mothers Alternate Ending Is So Much Better

The most infamous part of How I Met Your Mother’s nine-season run is its ending. While the entirety of the show before it was spent building up to Ted’s relationship with Tracy, the finale abandoned it with a shocking twist, killing off the character fans had just gotten to know and love. The entire two-part finale feels like a slow-moving trainwreck in that respect, as the gang drifts apart and Ted mourns the loss of his soulmate to a terminal disease. The only consolation is the last few minutes, where Ted realizes he can still be with Robin and rushes to her apartment, blue french horn in tow.

Fortunately, for all those disappointed by the canon ending, the show released a five-minute alternate ending as a part of the final season DVD release. It’s short and sweet, cutting out any mention of Tracy’s death, or Ted getting back together with Robin. In a response to Lily at Ted and Tracy’s wedding reception, Ted says his journey to meet his wife wasn’t actually that hard. He then launches into a minute-long recap of the events of the show, lampshading how much he really did have to go through. It’s a great summation of how all nine years of the show really were necessary, as the chain of events that lead people to meet their soulmates are weird, complicated and full of joy.

The alternate ending then drops out of Ted’s narration and back into his actual first meeting with Tracy at the bus stop. It’s raining, and as they huddle under her yellow umbrella, they strike up a playful argument about whose it is. At first, it’s full of playful puns and banter, showing off the couple’s chemistry. Ted has always been a dork, but Tracy is immediately on his wavelength. Things then get more serious as the two actually realize they had traded the umbrella back and forth throughout the years, missing each other by a hair’s breadth. The final line of “Sometimes, you just find things” is perfect, once again reinforcing the theme of serendipity.

And that’s it. The show lets the music kick up and the credits roll. The final scene is Ted meeting Tracy, it’s “How I Met Your Mother.” While a huge part of the show is about a conflict between the love of Ted’s life and his soulmate — between Robin and Tracy — the solution isn’t to veer back towards Robin at the last possible second. It’s to show how even in letting Robin go Ted allows himself to open up to the potential for a new love. For the entirety of the show’s run, Ted had been trying to get over Robin, and it wasn’t until he did that he could move on. This is even mirrored in Tracy’s storyline (which fans see in the much-acclaimed episode “How Your Mother Met Me”). She can’t meet Ted until she moves on from the death of her previous love.

The answer as to why the original ending was chosen lies in underestimation and precommitment. How I Met Your Mother’s co-creators had no idea the show would be so popular when it first aired and shot its final ending ahead of time so as to prevent the actors who played Ted’s children from aging too much. An ending where Ted got back together with Robin after two or three seasons wouldn’t have been as universally reviled. Controversial? Sure. But there are plenty of fans who love Robin.

But instead, the show went on for a long nine years, during which Robin and Barney grew closer and closer together. The entirety of the final season is based around their wedding, further contributing to fans’ acceptance of the two as a couple. And those same fans adored Cristin Milioti’s depiction of Tracy. So, now the finale has to claw apart two different couples fans are already on-board for to give them one relationship the show had already evolved beyond the need for. Calling a show’s finale nine years in advance is extremely risky, and it didn’t work out for How I Met Your Mother. Thankfully, the alternate ending is a beautiful encapsulation of everything that does work about the show and a treasure to every fan who felt let down.
