Why James Bond Movie Characters Never Get Their Own Spinoffs

Barbara Broccoli, one of the main producers of the James Bond franchise for almost three decades, explains why there haven’t been any spinoffs centered on the 007 supporting cast. Spanning across almost 60 years, with 25 films now under its belt, the Bond franchise has become a staple of cinematic history. Over time, Bond has had many different iterations with varying actors and recurring characters alongside the agent’s appearances.

In the latest installment of the franchise, No Time to Die, 007 comes out of happy retirement after being contacted by a close friend to help rescue a kidnapped scientist from a deadly new villain. The film marked the end of Daniel Craig’s run as the impervious secret agent and has left the future of the franchise open to a new Bond or, potentially, a new 007 altogether. Alongside Craig, the film also starred Rami Malek, Ana de Armas, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Ben Whishaw, and Ralph Fiennes.

In a tell-all interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Broccoli shared her thoughts on Bond spinoffs, the potential future of the Bond franchise, and the protectiveness she feels over the character and properties. The longtime producer explained how making a film set in the universe of Bond without the infamous agent making an appearance would be extremely odd, considering his main character status. Read her full quote below:

Sure, there are other main characters like M and Q and all that, but we haven’t really wanted to make a Bond film without Bond. It would be like making Hamlet without Hamlet.

Despite Broccoli’s firm stance about not developing spinoffs within the franchise, there have been past rumors and reports of Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing a Bond spinoff. Waller-Bridge previously worked on rewrites of the No Time to Die script and a past leak had claimed that the script had planned to introduce a daughter of Bond, named Mathilde. Even though this leak did turn out to be true within the film, the rumors of these future spinoffs can also be considered false with this new information coming to light.

With these new reports directly from the development team, any hopes for spinoffs centering on Bond’s colorful cast of allies seems bleak. However, whatever happens with the future of the franchise, audiences can still rest assured that the supporting cast will still be front and center alongside 007 on his adventures and be standouts among future casts. The latest James Bond outing is in theatres and streaming now.
